Capt. Brenda Vereen

Capt. Brenda Joyce Vereen, USAF Ret., 60, died Monday, July 20, 2009. A native of Winton, NC and a Virginia Peninsula resident for twenty years. Brenda retired in 1992 from the U.S. Air Force after twenty years in Public Affairs, and most recently worked as an Instructor with Northrop Grumman. She was a member of Joy Church in Newport News and served as Head of the Deacon Ministry.
Survivors include her mother, Priscilla Evans, of Winton, NC; one daughter, Vereen Anderson of Carrollton; four sisters, Gilda Mizelle (Alvin) of Ahoskie, NC, Teresa June (Charlie) of Newport News, Regina Redmond (Eric) of Dumfries, and Angela Watford (Robert) of Cofield, NC; three brothers, Keith Evans (Theresa) of Sabattus, Maine, Charles Evans of Baton Rouge, LA and Tobias Evans of Winton, NC; four nieces, Erica Redmond of BelAir, MD, Steffani Holloman of Denver, CO, Ursula Holloman of Newport News and Ranada Bloodworth of Winton, NC; four nephews, Robert Darden, Terrell June both of Newport News, Joel Holloman of CA and Reginald J. Redmond of Norfolk; and a special cousin, Edward A. Holloman (Lucy) of Winton, NC.
The family received friends at the church one hour prior to the service.
A funeral service was held at 11:30 AM on Wednesday, July 29, 2009 at Joy Church, 490 Denbigh Blvd., Newport News with Pastor Chuck Patterson officiating. Interment followed at 3:00 PM in Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, Suffolk, VA with full military honors.
