AHOSKIE – Shaun Reid will be moving from Murfreesboro to Kinston.
The 2009 graduate of Hertford County Public Schools has signed to play basketball at Lenoir Community College.
Reid, who played his junior season at Hertford County High School, was discovered by Lenoir Community College Head Coach Bobby Dawson at a Prime Preps Showcase held on the campus of Barton College.
Reid was invited to the showcase and made the All-Star team while playing in the camp.
“They were Region X champions last year and that was important for me,” Reid said. “Also, I have an opportunity to compete for the starting point guard position during my freshman year.”
While those were important in the decision, another factor was Lenoir Community College assistant coach Tad Parsons who had a friendship with Termaine Totten.
“He is my best friend and the fact that he had a relationship with the assistant coach made it even more comfortable,” Reid said.
Reid said he was excited about the possibility of living in Kinston as well since it was a much bigger city.
He is currently playing in the Virginia 7-City Pro-Am. He said he is enjoying the experience and is looking forward to the summer.
Reid said when he heads to Lenoir Community he is mainly looking forward to improving his game.
“I want to get better and to help my team,” he said. “After two years, I would like to move on and play at the next level.”
Reid said he did not know where he would go after Lenoir and wasn’t going to be concerned about it.
“I just take things as they come, that’s the way it happened with Lenoir,” he said.
He is planning to major in Sports Management and Communications.
While he is going to college to play basketball, Reid said his original love was baseball. He played that sport for several years before switching to basketball.
“My dad (Charles Askew) is the main reason I switched,” he said. “I played basketball before, but not at the competitive level. He saw some potential in me, I guess and started working with me and sending me to camps.”
The signing is the second for the family as Reid’s brother, Michael Jackson, signed with Livingstone College two years ago.
Reid is the son of Charles and Tomeka Askew of Ahoskie and Barshall Reid of Murfreesboro. He has three brothers – Jackson, Tayvon Askew and Malik Askew as well as a sister, Jazmyn Reid.
