Rocky Mount slips by Ahoskie

AHOSKIE – Rocky Mount Post 58 edged Ahoskie Post 102 11-8 in a Senior American Legion baseball game here Friday night.

Rocky Mount opened the scoring with one run in the top of the first frame, but Ahoskie struck back quickly.

Zeek Williams walked just before Gavin Mizelle was hit by a pitch. Williams scored on an Eli Spruill double to left-centerfield to tie the game at 1-all.

Rocky Mount added three marks in the top of the second and held that lead until the local squad sent three runs across the plate in the bottom of the third inning.

With two out in the third, Kyle Hughes singled to left and Mizelle followed by hitting a two-run homer to right. Spruill then made it back-to-back dingers as he hit a solo shot over the right field wall to tie the game at 4-all.

Rocky Mount scored one run in the top of the fourth frame to take the lead for good. Post 58 added two runs in the top of the fifth and led 7-4 after five innings.

The visiting Post squad scored its final four runs in the top of the seventh and led 11-4 going to the bottom of the seventh.

Ahoskie scored one run in the bottom of the inning. Joe Harrell was hit by a pitch, but was erased at second when Travis Ellis reached via fielder’s choice. Ellis went to third on a wild pickoff throw by third and then scored on another wild pitch after Grayson Toms walked.

Aaron Hoggard and Spruill each drew a walk to load the bases, but a fly out ended the inning with Post 58 leading 11-5.

Ahoskie added three more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Josh Morris walked and moved all the way to third when Edward Joyner reached first on an error. Morris scored on a Harrell RBI-single to center. Ellis walked to load the bases and then Joyner scored on a Hoggard RBI-infield single. Harrell scored on an error on the play.

Mizelle walked to reload the bases, but two strikeouts ended the threat with Rocky Mount still ahead by three runs (11-8).

Ahoskie went down in order in the bottom of the ninth.

Dylan Ralph pitched four innings for Post 102 while Brent Bowen tossed three innings and Dakota Young and Chad Gurganus pitched one inning each.

Ahoskie had nine hits with Ellis, Hoggard and Spruill recording two each.

“We just couldn’t get a key hit tonight,” said Post 102 Head Coach David Ellis. “We left the bases loaded twice.

“We earned respect tonight. We played well tonight,” he added.

Ahoskie dropped to 4-13 overall and 2-4 in conference play. They will travel to Wilson for a 7 p.m. matchup tonight (Tuesday).
