Edenton blanks Ahoskie

EDENTON – Post 40 right-handers Austin Beasley and Chad Whitehead combined to pitch a three-hit shutout Tuesday night.

The Edenton pitchers led Post 40 to a 6-0 victory over Ahoskie Post 102 in a Senior American Legion baseball contest.

Edenton opened the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the second. Those marks ended a nine-inning scoreless streak by Post 102 pitchers.

Post 102 threatened in the top of the third.

With one out, Mitchell Godwin singled to left and Joe Harrell singled to right. Travis Ellis then walked to load the bases. The three runners were left stranded with a strikeout and pop out ended the inning.

Post 40 then added two runs in the bottom of the third to take a 4-0 advantage.

Ahoskie only had two more base-runners during the contest. Aaron Hoggard had a lead-off single in the top of the seventh and Gavin Mizelle reached on a two-out error in the ninth.

Edenton’s final runs came in the home half of the seventh when Evan Holton walked, stole second and scored on a wild pitch. Daniel Oliver singled and scored on a Beasley double.

Whitehead had a leadoff double for Edenton in the eighth, but didn’t score.

Josh Morris pitched six innings for Ahoskie, allowing four hits and striking out eight. Chad Gurganus tossed two innings and surrendered three hits while striking out five.

Beasley went eight innings for Edenton, allowing three hits. He struck out nine. Whitehead pitched one inning and allowed no runs and no hits. He struck out one.

Ahoskie’s three hits were by Godwin, Harrell and Hoggard.

Ahoskie is now 4-12 overall and 2-3 in conference play. They travel to Rocky Mount Monday for a 7 p.m. contest.
