WINTERVILLE – Post 160 scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth here Wednesday night.

The final inning score allowed Pitt County to take a 6-5 win over Ahoskie American Legion Post 102 in a Senior American Legion baseball game.

After leaving the bases loaded in the top of the second inning, Ahoskie finally got on the board in the top of the third.

Travis Ellis singled and stole second. Ellis went to third on a Gavin Mizelle single and scored when Aaron Hoggard reached on a fielder’s choice. Chad Gurganus singled to load the bases and then Eli Spruill drew a bases-loaded walk to force home Mizelle.

Kyle Hughes had an RBI-squeeze bunt scoring Hoggard and then Gurganus came home on an error on the play to give Ahoskie a 4-0 lead.

Pitt County responded with a run in the bottom of the third to cut their deficit to 4-1.

Ahoskie, however, added another run in the top of the seventh stanza. Josh Morris was hit by a pitch and went to second on a Mizelle groundout. After stealing third, Morris scored on a Hoggard sacrifice fly to make it 5-1.

Pitt County added three runs in the bottom of the seventh and one in the eighth to tie the contest at 5-all. A walk-off homerun in the ninth gave Post 160 the victory.

Ahoskie used four pitchers during the contest including Dakota Young – who started and went six innings – as well as Dylan Ralph, Mizelle and Brent Bowen.

Ahoskie had seven hits with Gurganus recording three of them. Ellis, Mizelle, Hoggard and Spruill added one hit each.

“We just couldn’t shut the door,” said Post 102 Head Coach David Ellis. “It just wasn’t our night. We are a team to be reckoned with.

“This is the third game we have lost in the last inning this year,” he added. “We played well tonight.”

Ahoskie dropped to 3-9 overall. They will play a doubleheader at Garner Sunday. First pitch will be at 1 p.m.
