Pitt County rallies by Ahoskie

AHOSKIE – Pitt County Post 39 made the most of their trip to Ahoskie Sunday.

The Senior American Legion team swept Ahoskie Post 102 by scores of 13-0 and 16-13 here during an afternoon doubleheader.

In the first game, Post 102 managed just two hits as Pitt County won 13-0.

Pitt County opened the scoring with three runs in the top of the first and added eight more in the top of the second to surge out to an 11-0 lead.

In the bottom of the third inning, Grayson Toms reached on an error and Eli Spruill singled. The runners advance on a wild pitch with two out, but a groundout ended the threat.

Pitt County scored its final two runs in the top of the fourth and took a comfortable 13-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth, Chad Gurganus singled and Kyle Hughes drew a two-out walk. Toms was then hit by a pitch to load the bases, but a groundout ended the threat and the game.

Ahoskie used three pitchers during the contest. Dakota Young, Travis Ellis and Spruill all saw time on the mound.

In the second game, Pitt County rallied for eight runs in the top of the seventh as they edged Ahoskie 16-13.

Pitt County led 5-0 going into the bottom of the second, but Ahoskie scored four runs in the stanza.

Josh Morris singled, Mitchell Godwin walked and Brent Bowen singled to load the bases. Morris scored on a Travis Ellis bases-loaded walk. Godwin then scored when Eli Spruill singled. Bowen and Ellis scored on a two-run single by Gavin Mizelle as Ahoskie closed to within 5-4.

Post 102 added a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning.

Chad Gurganus singled to center and stole second. He advanced to third on a Morris groundout and scored on an Edward Joyner infield single. Joyner went to second on an error and scored when Godwin singled to left as Ahoskie grabbed a 6-5 lead.

Pitt County tied the score with a run in the top of the fourth frame.

Ahoskie scored four runs in the home half of the fourth to grab a 10-6 lead.

Ellis and Spruill had back to back singles to right. An error on Spruill’s hit sent the runners to second and third. Ellis came around to score on a Mizelle single to left. Hoggard then walked to load the bases.

Spruill scored on a wild pitch before Mizelle and Hoggard came home on a Morris two-run double to right-centerfield.

Pitt County scored two runs in the top of the sixth stanza to close the gap to 10-8.

Ahoskie scored two in the bottom of the sixth inning. Mizelle had an infield single and went to third on an error on the play. Mizelle scored on a Zeek Williams RBI-double to right-center. Williams went to third on a wild pitch and scored on another wild pitch.

Ahoskie led 12-8 after six innings.

Pitt County scored eight runs in the top of the seventh to take a 16-12 lead.

Ahoskie added one in the bottom of the inning. Bowen, Ellis and Mizelle all drew walks. With one out, Hoggard drew a bases-loaded walk to score Bowen. Two strikeouts ended the game.

Post 102 used six pitchers including Jacob Dunlow, Dylan Ralph, Williams, Morris, Mizelle and Bowen.

Post 102 had 16 hits in the doubleheader led by Spruill with four of those. Mizelle and Gurganus had three hits each.

With the loss, Ahoskie dropped to 1-5. They will host Edenton at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
