Post 40 tops Ahoskie

EDENTON – Post 40 broke open a 3-all tie with one run in the bottom of the second inning and edged Ahoskie Post 102, 6-3, in a Senior American Legion game here Tuesday.

Ahoskie opened the scoring with one run in the top of the first frame. Travis Ellis walked and then advanced to third on an Eli Spruill single to right. Spruill stole second and Ellis scored on an error on the play giving Post 102 a 1-0 lead.

Edenton plated three runs in the bottom of the first to take a 3-1 lead.

Ahoskie responded by scoring two runs to tie the contest in the top of the second inning.

Edward Joyner drew a walk before Zeek Williams singled to left. The two runners advanced on a Mitchell Godwin groundout. Joyner scored on a Dylan Ralph RBI-groundout and then Williams scored when Ellis doubled to left-center field to tie the score.

Edenton, however, scored a run in the bottom of the second to take the lead for good.

In the top of the third inning, Gavin Mizelle singled to left before Aaron Hoggard drew a walk. Both advanced on a Chad Gurganus groundout. A strikeout and groundout, however, ended the threat.

Edenton added another run in the bottom of the third to take a 5-3 lead.

Ahoskie’s final threat came in the top of the sixth stanza.

Joyner singled and Williams walked with no one out, but two strikeouts and a groundout ended the threat.

Post 40 plated its final run in the bottom of the sixth to take the 6-3 win.

Brandon Warren pitched five innings, suffering the loss. Josh Morris tossed the final three innings.

Ahoskie had six hits – one each by Ellis, Spruill, Mizelle, Joyner, Williams and Grayson Toms.

Four Lawrence Academy players were on the field for Edenton. Jonathan Brantley pitched two innings and Daniel Oliver tossed one inning.

Evan Holton and Chad Whitehead each had one hit for Post 40.

Ahoskie dropped to 0-3 with the loss and will host Pitt County Post 160 at 7 p.m. Saturday in Ahoskie. They will then play Pitt County Post 39 in a doubleheader Sunday at home. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
