Post 102 sweeps Cary

AHOSKIE – Ahoskie American Legion Post 102 swept a doubleheader from Cary here Saturday afternoon.

The local junior AL team defeated Post 67 by counts of 4-2 and 8-6.

In game one, Scott Edge tossed a two-hitter and added 18 strikeouts as Post 102 claimed a 4-2 victory.

Cary opened the scoring with one run in the bottom of the first to take an early lead.

Ahoskie evened things up in the bottom of the second. Edge drew a walk and then Jacob Rose reached on an error. Edge and Rose pulled off a double steal to give Post 102 runners at second and third.

Edge scored on a Patrick Dilday RBI-groundout that moved Rose to third. Rose, however, was thrown out at home after Chris Rogerson flew out, leaving the score tied at 1-all.

Cary went back ahead in the top of the third inning with one run to make it 2-1. In the bottom of the same inning, Simon Hoggard reached on an error with two outs. Blake Hill doubled to left, but Hoggard was thrown out at home, leaving Cary ahead by a single run.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Ahoskie surged ahead for good.

Rogerson was hit by a pitch and Jim Porter walked to give Post 102 a pair of base runners. Rogerson scored when Daniel Merritt singled to left. Tyler Burden (running for Porter) advanced to third and Merritt took second on the throw home.

Burden scored on a Hoggard RBI-single which advanced Merritt to third. Merritt then went home on a Hill sacrifice fly, giving Ahoskie a 4-2 advantage.

Neither team scored after the fifth frame.

Edge pitched seven innings to pick up his first win of the season. He allowed two runs on two hits.

In game number two Saturday, it was Hill who led the way. He pitched three innings for the win and was 3-for-3 at the plate to help Ahoskie beat Cary 8-6.

This time it was Ahoskie on the board first as Merritt singled to right, stole second and moved to third on Hill’s double to left. Merritt scored on an Edge RBI-single to center that sent Hill to third. Hill scored on a Braxton Sumner RBI-groundout to give Ahoskie a 2-0 lead.

Post 102 added five runs in the bottom of the second stanza.

Burden had an infield single to get things started. He moved to third when Marvin Harrell reached via an error. Burden scored on a wild pickoff throw by third. Harrell took second on that throw and scored when Merritt singled to center.

Hill then singled to left and Edge walked to load the bases. All three runners score when Sumner laced a three-run double to left-center, giving Ahoskie a 7-0 lead.

Cary scored one run in the top of the third and another in the top of the fourth to close the gap to 7-2.

Ahoskie scored its final run in the bottom of the fourth frame. Hill hit a solo homer to center, his second of the season, to give Post 102 an 8-2 advantage.

Cary scored two runs in the top of the sixth and two in the top of the seventh and had the bases loaded with two outs in the final inning, but a groundout ended the game.

Hill pitched three innings for the victory while Dilday, Cody White and Burden also pitched.

Ahoskie pounded out 14 hits in the double header. Hill led the team with four hits and two RBIs while Merritt had three hits. Rogerson, Hoggard, Edge, Rose, Dilday, Burden and Sumner had one hit each. Sumner added four RBIs.

Ahoskie improved to 2-1 for the season. There next game is Wednesday when they travel to Williamston for a 7 p.m. contest.
