Lady Falcons trump Hertford County

WINDSOR – Senior Courtney Dunlow and freshman Caroline White combined to pitch a no-hitter here Friday afternoon.
The Bertie High School tandem led the Lady Falcons to a 6-0 victory over Hertford County High School in a Northeastern Coastal Conference softball outing.
The Lady Falcons opened the scoring quickly, getting one run in the bottom of the first frame. Jody Mizelle had a leadoff inside-the-park homer to give Bertie a 1-0 advantage.
Bertie added three more in the bottom of the second stanza. Whitney Castelloe singled and went to second on a wild pitch. She came around to score on a Mizelle RBI-double to left-center field.
Mizelle then scored when Dunlow reached on a three-base error. Dunlow came home on White’s sacrifice fly to make it 4-0 in favor of the home squad.
The Lady Falcons added a run in the bottom of the fourth frame. Castelloe reached on a three-base error and scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-0.
The final run in the game came when Bertie scored in the bottom of the sixth stanza. Castelloe singled to center and went to second on a wild pitch. She scored on a White RBI-single to establish the final.
Dunlow pitched the first three innings, allowing no run on no hits with four strikeouts. White pitched the final four allowing no runs and no hits with eight strikeouts.
Amber Matthews tossed a complete game for the Lady Bears, scattering just six hits and striking out four.
Mizelle, White and Castelloe had two hits each for the Lady Falcons.
“I am proud of both pitchers,” Bertie coach Jackie Copeland said. “Courtney and Caroline both pitched great.
“We missed Christie Brown and Kaitlyn Dunlow today, but hope to have both of them back for the state playoffs,” she added. “We have lots of work to do to prepare for the playoffs.”
The Lady Bears finished the season 3-16 overall and 2-9 in league play.
Bertie is 18-3 overall and 10-1 in conference play. They played their final league game yesterday (Monday) at Currituck.
