Ahhhh….spring.

Warm weather is starting to invade the Roanoke-Chowan region and that means more people or our streets as people begin moving around more.

There will be children playing in the front yards of homes – and maybe even in roadways on back streets – and there will be more joggers, walkers and bicycle riders enjoying the great outdoors.

While all of these things are a wonderful sign of a time that most of us enjoy, they are also a reminder that those of us operating motor vehicles must be sharper in our focus.

It’s easy to get distracted by telephone calls, text messages, children in the back seat or conversations, but we must not let that happen. With all of those people out on the streets, it could mean a fatal injury if we’re not careful.

Always be wary, but be especially cautious when driving through residential areas or areas with playgrounds or playing fields.

Be on the lookout for walkers and people on bicycles. Be mindful of children playing close to the street and be ready to brake, should any children or pets dash into the roadway.

On the other hand, people in and around the street who are not in cars or trucks should also be careful. Remember that you are smaller and less noticeable than a vehicle, and that drivers may not see you until they are close at hand.

If walking, walk on the left side of the street, facing oncoming traffic so you can see when a car is coming your way. Wear light-colored or reflective clothing, especially if walking at twilight or after sundown.

Bike-riders should ride on the right side of the street, and should equip their bike with reflectors or lights.

There is room on our roads for vehicles, walkers, bike-riders and anyone else. Car drivers, walkers and children all need to be more cautious when they are out and about.

A few seconds of caution will help everyone have a great spring and summer.
