KILL DEVIL HILLS – Five runs in the bottom of the sixth lifted First Flight High School past Hertford County here Thursday night.

The two teams battled in a Northeastern Coastal Conference baseball game for the second time this season and the Nighthawks claimed a 10-6 victory.

First Flight opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second and took the early lead.

The Bears, however, responded with four runs in the top of the third inning.

Monterio Hunter walked and promptly stole second and third. Grayson Toms and Travis Ellis drew back-to-back walks to load the bases for HCHS. Richard Burns then plated Hunter on a sacrifice fly. Toms scored on an Edward Joyner RBI-fielder’s choice. Ellis and Joyner came around when Brandon Warren reached on an error as the Bears took a 4-2 lead.

First Flight took the lead back quickly, however, scoring three runs in the bottom of the third to go ahead 5-4.

HCHS responded too, scoring two runs of their own in the top of the fourth frame.

Tyler Pryor singled and came all the way around to score on a triple by Hunter. Toms then walked and, on a double steal, Hunter swiped home to make it 6-5 in favor of the Bears.

The lead held up until the bottom of the sixth stanza when the Nighthawks plated five to take the eventual win 10-6.

Ellis pitched six innings and suffered the loss while allowing nine hits.

The Bears had just four hits – one each by Ellis, Pryor, Hunter and Mitchell Godwin.

“We made six errors and First Flight took advantage of them, especially in the sixth inning,” said HCHS Head Coach Chris Towell. “You can’t make errors against a good team and expect to win. We just couldn’t hold the lead.”

The loss dropped the Bears to 7-7 overall and 4-3 in league play.
