ASKEWVILLE – After falling in the first round, Ahoskie Christian School needed to rebound quickly – and they did.

The Warriors topped Coastal Christian 47-29 Friday afternoon to advance to the fifth place game of the North Carolina Christian Athletic Conference (NCCAC).

The Warriors were led by Jalen Cooley’s 16 points and 14 from Stanton Plaunty.

It was Dorian Freeman who got the Warriors on the board first with an early basket and then Cooley added a three-pointer which put Ahoskie up 5-0.

Gabe Gaweda had a hoop for the Centurions, but Ahoskie answered with Plaunty’s first hoop of the game. Jacob Vendetti had the final hoop of the first quarter, but Ahoskie still led 7-4.

Miles Butler got Coastal within one, but a free throw and bucket by Zack Walter started a 7-0 spurt for the Warriors. Bruce Lassiter and Cooley had the other hoops on the run as Ahoskie grabbed a 14-6 edge.

The Centurions, however, scored the final four points of the first half thanks to hoops from Gaweda and Vendetti as they closed to within 14-10 at the intermission.

The third quarter was key for Ahoskie as they used that period to pull away from the Centurions, who were seeded one spot behind the Warriors.

After a Freeman hoop, Cooley buried another triple for the Warriors to take a 19-10 lead. The Centurions responded quickly, sandwiching a Bobby Harrell hoop and a Vendetti three-pointer around two free throws from Walter as they closed within 21-15.

An exchange of hoops left the Warriors with the same six-point edge (27-21), the Warriors used an 8-2 run to pull away late in the third quarter. Plaunty was the leader on the run with six points while Colley added two. Ahoskie led 35-22 heading into the final quarter.

In the fourth period, Ahoskie outscored their opponents 12-7 to take the victory.

In addition to the double-digit scoring, the Warriors got five points from Walter, and four each from Freeman and Omari Mitchell. Jerome Meadows and Lassiter added two each.
