SEABOARD — A CSX train derailed just west of here Monday afternoon.

According to Northampton County Sheriff Wardie Vincent as of Monday evening several local fire departments as well as a hazmat team are at the scene.

The derailment forced the closure of N.C. 186 in the area as well as the evacuation of two residences. Vincent said those homes were evacuated as a precaution.

According to CSX officials, the preliminary report is 19 cars of a freight train derailed west of Seaboard while in route from Rocky Mount to Branchdale, Va. The derailment occurred at approximately 3:30 p.m.

The train consists of two locomotives and 94 cars.

Of the 19 cars that derailed, no hazardous materials were involved. CSX officials said one of the cars that derailed was carrying petroleum oil and was leaking.

CSX insisted the petroleum oil is not hazardous and efforts are being made to clean it up.

No injuries have been reported and an investigation by CSX is pending.
