LEWISTON WOODVILLE – Four people lost their home Saturday afternoon when it was destroyed by fire.

A doublewide mobile home located on the Connaritsa Road just outside of Lewiston Woodville was completely gutted by a fire that was reported at 5:45 p.m. Saturday.

“We were sitting in the house and heard crackling in the ceiling,” said Maggie Gray. “I went to my bedroom door but decided not to open it because I knew it could be dangerous. All four of us got out of the house.”

Gray, her six-year-old son and her parents were at home when the fire reportedly began in the roof area in the back corner of the home.

The Lewiston Woodville Fire Department (LWFD) responded to the scene with the assistance of the Aulander Fire Department (AFD) who responded on a mutual aid call for water, according to LWFD Chief Larry Mizelle.

Both Gray and Mizelle said the home was a total loss and there was likely nothing salvageable.

“It appears they lost everything,” Mizelle said.

Gray said there was insurance on the home, but said the family probably lost all of their personal possessions. She said they hoped to go into the remains of the structure sometime Monday to see if there was anything left.

“It’s tough,” Gray said. “But I thank God that we were all able to get out safely.”
