Peggy Brown Byrd, 79, a native of Gates County and Miss North Carolina in 1959, died Monday, January 19, 2009 at Hampton Roads Specialty Hospital.
Survivors include her husband, Jack Byrd; two sisters, Lois Hofler and Marjorie Hobbs; and a brother, Bedford H. Brown Jr.
After capturing the Miss North Carolina title in 1959, Byrd went on to earn “Miss Congeniality” honors at the Miss Universe Pageant.
In her professional career, she worked as a real estate agent and broker with Chorey and Associates Realty, Ltd.
She was a member of Oakland Christian Church.
Memorial services were held on Saturday, Jan. 24 at Oakland Christian Church.
