Rams handle LA

AHOSKIE – Ridgecroft’s defense held Lawrence to just four percent shooting in the first half as the Lady Rams claimed third place in the Lt. Nick Brantley Scholarship Tournament with a 43 – 21 victory Thursday night.

Senior Bardin Murray scored 10 of the Lady Rams’ 12 points in the first quarter and helped the Ridgecroft defense hold Lawrence scoreless.

With a 12-0 lead, Emily Cooke took a steal to the basket for Ridgecroft to start the second quarter. Ashtyn Mizelle’s basket with 6:10 on the clock ended the Lady Warrior’s scoring drought.

Caitlin Harrison took the ball coast to coast before Cooke and Tayler Smith added a foul shot apiece, stretching Ridgecroft’s lead to 16 (18-2) at the half.

The Lady Warriors added six points in the third quarter but trailed Ridgecroft 28-8 entering the fourth quarter. Lawrence stepped up their defensive pressure but it came too late as they fell to Ridgecroft, 43-21.

Murray led all scorers with 13 points. Smith followed with 10 points.

Mizelle posted a double-double to lead Lawrence, with 12 points and 10 boards.

Turnovers plagued Lawrence, costing them possession and points, as the Lady Warriors turned the ball over 35 times in the game.

Murray paced the Lady Rams were led by Murray’s 13 points followed by Smith’s 10-point performance. Cooke added seven while Caitlin Harrison had five, Sara Hackney four and Caroline Bowman added two.

Mizelle led Lawrence with 12 points while Casey Belch contributed six. Ashton Lyle had two points.
