LASKER – Northeast Academy completed a sweep of Lawrence Academy with a 47-37 victory in the varsity boys basketball game Friday night.
Junior Jud Smith led the Eagles with 13 points. Hunter Deloatch added 11 points and pulled down nine rebounds. Classmate Brandon Futrell also scored 11 and had seven boards.
The game was tied at four early on before Northeast went on an 11-0 run to take a 15-4 advantage. Daniel Olivers’s foul shot ended the Eagles run. Jeremy Parker took Deloatch’s pass to the basket for two, giving Northeast a 12 point lead. Shane Stevens sank two free throws to pull Lawrence within 10 at the end of the first quarter.
“In the first quarter we got in our transition game,” said Northeast Head Coach John Brown. “We made it tough for them to get in their offense.”
The Warriors scored six unanswered points at the beginning of the second to pull within four at 17-13.
Deloatch made two foul shots and a basket before Oliver scored a Lawrence bucket. Deloatch took a steal to the hoop and James Pope sank two free throws, sandwiching a bucket by Chase Stevens, giving the Eagles a 25-17 lead at the half.
Jay Baugham and Smith scored at the start of the third quarter. Stevens drained two treys and Chad Whitehead scored a layup to pull the Warriors within four points (29-25). Deloatch hit the front end of a pair of foul shots, but Oliver converted a three-point play, cutting the Northeast lead to two going into the fourth quarter.
“In the second and third quarter we had to go to a zone because of foul trouble,” explained Brown. “Their zone bothered us and we made some bad decisions. We kept the lead, but they kept inching back.”
Smith’s three-point play spurred on a nine-point Northeast run, including two buckets by Futrell. Another Stevens three-pointer and a deuce ended the Eagles run and pulled Lawrence within six. The Warriors wouldn’t get any closer as they fell to Northeast, 47-37.
Stevens led Lawrence with 20 points followed by Oliver with 11.
Northeast played tough defense, causing 14 Lawrence turnovers, including four attributed to Baughan.
The junior varsity Eagles used a third quarter scoring spurt to pull ahead of Lawrence as they took a 48-41 win. Brad Johnson led all scorers with 18. Will Glover added 11 and Clay Robbins scored nine for the Eagles. Lawrence was led by Shane Trip with 17, including three treys. Scott Dunlow followed with 16 points.
