WINDSOR – Bertie High School placed two members on the All-Northeastern Coastal Conference tennis team.
During the NCC tournament last week, senior Courtney Dunlow and junior Jodie Mizelle were selected by the league’s coaches as one of the 12 players named to the team.
“I’m proud of Courtney and Jody,” BHS Tennis Coach Jackie Copeland said. “They have worked hard not only in singles competition, but as doubles partners and I’m glad the league’s coaches recognized that effort.”
Dunlow and Mizelle were two of the reasons Bertie High School won its third consecutive 3-A division title inside the league and will be advancing to the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state playoffs.
As a doubles’ team, Mizelle and Dunlow recorded an 11-3 record while Dunlow went 10-3 for the season in singles and Mizelle posted a 9-4 mark. The two finished second in the number one doubles bracket in the conference tournament.
“I feel privileged to be one of the top 12 people in the conference,” Dunlow said. “When I started out as a freshman not thinking I would play tennis at all, I feel good about how far I’ve come in four years.”
Mizelle said she felt the same way.
“To be recognized as All-Conference in tennis is exciting,” Mizelle said. “Courtney and I both appreciate the honor that the coaches gave us.”
The two will continue their play in the regional playoffs as a doubles team and in team competition.
