Dr. Malene Grant Irons, a native of Gates County, died at Cypress Glen Retirement Community on October 8, 2008. She was the widow of Cary Frederick Irons Jr.
A memorial service was conducted Friday 2008 at Jarvis Memorial United Methodist Church.
After teaching school in Pitt County for one year to earn tuition and expense money, she enrolled at Duke for pre-medical courses not offered at East Carolina. In 1945, they chose to set up their practices in Greenville, where they remained for the remainder of their lives.
Survivors include three sons, Thomas G. Irons and Ben G. Irons II , both of Greenville, and C. Fred Irons III of Chapel Hill; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
