AHOSKIE – Ridgecroft School finally did what no other team in the TIC could.
The Lady Rams upset Tarheel Independent Conference leader Lawrence Academy in a five-set thriller last week. The Lady Rams won 19-25, 25-22, 14-25, 25-23 and 15-9.
“Our game was decided by serving,” said Lawrence Academy coach Dr. Ed Clouse. “We won when we served well and we lost when we served poorly. Ridgecroft is too good of a team to make unforced errors against.”
The Lady Warriors entered last week’s contest 6-0 in the TIC despite returning just two starters from last year’s club.
Despite the loss, Lawrence did get some excellent individual performances. Ashtyn Mizelle led the way with nine digs, eight kills, four aces and one block while Danielle Davis recorded six kills, five digs, four blocks and three aces.
Warriors senior Debbie Stotesbury had nine digs, four aces and three kills while Jennifer White had five kills, four digs, three aces and three blocks. Ashton Lyle had three digs, two kills, one block and one ace and Shelby Zube added 14 digs, two kills and one ace.
Lawrence dropped to 7-3 overall and 6-1 in the TIC.
In the junior varsity contest, Ridgecroft was also the winner. The Lady Rams took a straight-set win over Lawrence by counts of 25-18 and 25-15.
