NEA tennis triumphs over Roanoke Rapids

ROANOKE RAPIDS – Northeast Academy ran its record to 5-0 Monday.

The Lady Eagles took a 7-2 tennis victory over Roanoke Rapids High School to keep their perfect mark for the 2008 campaign.

Northeast number four seed Taylor Cocke led the Eagles with a straight set 6-0, 6-0 victory over Jenna Wesner of Roanoke Rapids. Fifth-seeded Kelsey Futrell did almost as well, topping E. Walker by dual counts of 6-1.

LeAnn Barnes, the number two seed for Northeast, took a straight-set win over E. Monds of Roanoke Rapids. She claimed victory by counts of 6-1 and 6-2.

Third-seeded Kelly Edwards battled to a 4-6, 6-1, 10-5 win over Mia Wesner while number six seed Kathryn Bryant won 6-4 and 6-4 against D. Mayengna.

Yellow Jacket top seed McKenna Wesner took the only singles victory for Roanoke Rapids, edging Betty Edwards 6-2, 1-6, and 11-9.

In doubles, Betty Edwards and Bryant combined to take an 8-1 win over M. Wesner and Mayengna while Kelly Edwards and Cocke defeated Monds and Walker 8-4.

M. Wesner and J. Wesner defeated Barnes and Rose by an 8-2 count.
