Military convoy wrecks on US 17

WINDSOR – A vehicle in a military convoy overturned in the northbound lanes of US 13/17 here Thursday afternoon, shutting down traffic for about two hours.

According to Trooper J. Reid with the North Carolina Highway Patrol (Troop A District II), the driver of the military truck, James Soden, is a member of the United States Navy.

&uot;The vehicle ran off the road to the right and the driver swerved back onto the road and then overcorrected, causing the truck to tip over onto its side and slide into a guardrail,&uot; Reid stated.

Soden and one passenger were transported via ambulance to Martin General Hospital in Williamston, and later airlifted to Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville.

The accident occurred about a mile north of the Roanoke River bridge.

There were no other vehicles involved in the incident.

The convoy of about a dozen military vehicles and the rest of the traffic on the northbound lanes coming from Williamston into Bertie County was held up for two hours while the accident scene was cleared.

According to Pitt Memorial Hospital, Soden was treated and released.

The name and condition of his passenger are unknown.
