Emma Taylor

Ms. Emma Askew Taylor, 100, died August 24, 2008 at Guardian Care Nursing Home, Ahoskie.

Mrs. Taylor was a member of Piney Wood Chapel Baptist Church. She was the daughter of Walter and Hattie Weaver Askew. She was born in Bertie County, on February 22, 1908. She was the mother of two children. One daughter, Ola Mae Saunders; and a son, Clarence Taylor, who preceded her in death. She had one sister, Frances Hoggard of Philadelphia, PA. She has nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and 16 great-great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Emma was the wife of the late James Taylor for over 50 years. They were the owners of Taylor Grocery on Maple St., in Ahoskie, for over 15 years or more. Later about 1962 they built Taylor Grocery Store in Powellsville, where they operated it until retiring in the 1970’s.

Emma was a member of the Elk’s Lodge, Eastern Star and a Missionary at Piney Wood Chapel Baptist Church.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, August 29, 2008, at Piney Wood Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, by Dr. Roosevelt Askew Jr. Burial will be in the Askew family cemetery, Ahoskie. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge of arrangements.
