Teresa L. Manning

RAPID CITY – Teresa Lynn Manning, 46, died August 6, 2008 at her residence.

Survivors include a daughter, Julia McGraw, Rapid City; and one grandchild.

Randolph Hyman Sr.

WINDSOR n Randolph “Doddie” Hyman Sr., 54, died August 6, 2008 at Three Rivers Health and Rehab.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Indian Woods Baptist Church. A visitation will be held from 7-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Gilliam Funeral Home, Windsor, is in charge.

Jerry W. Willard

STOKES n Jerry Wayne Willard, 58, died

Willard attended Bertie County Schools and was a retail salesperson with Lowes of Greenville.

A funeral service was conducted Monday in the chapel of Walker Funeral Home by the Rev. Mike Peele. Burial was in the Hoggard family cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Bertie County Humane Society, P.O. Box 516, Powellsville, NC 27969.

Survivors include his sisters, Mary Nichols of Edenton, Etta Hoggard of Windsor and Kathy Hoggard, also of Windsor; and one brother, Gilbert Willard of Kinston.

Ruth C. Phelps

AHOSKIE n Ruth Cale Phelps, 73, died Thursday, August 7, 2008 at her son’s home. She was born in Bertie County on December 28, 1934 to the late William Odie and Belva Parker Cale and was predeceased by her husband, Kenneth Phelps. Ruth was a member of Creech Memorial Baptist Church and was a homemaker.

The Rev. Tom Ravan held funeral services on Sunday, August 10, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at Creech Memorial Baptist Church. Burial followed in Ahoskie Cemetery.

Survivors include a daughter, Charlotte and husband Bart Riddick of Ahoskie, NC; a son, Dale and wife Debbie Phelps of Ahoskie, NC and Justin Phelps of Nashville, TN; a brother, Merle T. Cale of Spring Hope, NC; sister-in-law, Violet Sheppard of Washington, NC; grandchildren, Lindsey and Ethan Phelps, Erin and Alex Riddick, all of Ahoskie, NC; and a great-grandson, Landon Phelps of Ahoskie, NC.

The family received friends from 5-7 p.m. on Saturday, August 9, 2008 at Walker Funeral Home, Windsor and at other times from the home of Dale and Debbie Phelps, 320 Baker St., Ahoskie. Alvin P. Lane

MURFREESBORO n Alvin Page Lane, 71, a native of Northampton County, died August 9, 2008, at his home.

Lane was retired after 31 years of service with the North Carolina Department of Corrections Enterprise directing the farming program.

Then he worked with Carroll Foods of Virginia for 10 years.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Alta Johnson Lane of their home; two sons, Alton Lane of Roxobel and Luther Lane of Rich Square; four grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; one sister, Levenia Askew of Milwaukee; and two brothers, Raleigh Lane of Newport News, VA and Linwood Lane of Woodland.

Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Cedarlawn Cemetery in Rich Square by the Rev. David Ross and the Rev. J.N. Baggett. The family will be receiving friends at the family home in Pine Tops.

Ruth E. Justice

Smithfield, VA – Ruth  Eure Justice, 80, passed away Sunday, August 10, 2008, at Sentara Obici Hospital after a brief illness.  A native of Sunbury, NC, Ruth was the daughter of the late Frank Edward and Matte Pierce Eure.  She formerly lived in Newport News for many years and graduated from Newport News High School in 1944.   She  had been a Smithfield resident since 1996. 

Professionally, Ruth  worked at NACA, later NASA.  She was an administrative secretary to Generals and Sr. Officers at  TRADOC, Ft. Monroe, where she retired in 1987, after more than thirty years of combined service. 

Ruth had a special love for animals and owned several dogs during her life.  After retirement with years at home, Ruth became an avid birdwatcher.  She cared deeply for her Pekinese and “ precious baby”, Alison who survives her.

Ruth will be remembered as a lady with strong and unique convictions and character.  She had a vivacious sense of humor and was a loyal friend.

Preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Virgil H. Justice, Ruth is survived by her son, Timothy Hurst Justice and his special friend, Barbara L. Anderson, of VA Beach;her sister, Carolyn E. Lyons and her husband, Harold, of Smithfield; her brother, Edward Frank Eure, and her sister-in-law, Libby Len Bain, both of Ingram, TX; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A graveside funeral service will be conducted 11:00 AM, Wednesday, August 13, in St. Luke’s Memorial Park.

COLERAIN n Hattie Raynor Nichols, 74, a native of Hertford County, died August 9, 2008 at her residence.

She was a member of Faith Tabernacle Church where she served as Church musician and Mother of the Church. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include two daughters, Iris Harris and Belinda Savage, both of Colerain; four sons, Pastor Larry Nichols, Samuel Nichols and Michael Nichols, all of Colerain and Bryant Nichols of the home; two sisters, Hilda Perry of Cofield and Ora Jenkins of Brooklyn, NY; 21 grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren.

AHOSKIE n Mary Ramsey Jones, died August 7, 2008 at Roanoke Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, Ahoskie, by Rev. Lebron Britt. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

She was a member of Calvary Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sons, Larry Ramsey of Ahoskie and Darryl Ramsey of New Jersey; one daughter, Josephine R. Ohbye of Ahoskie; two brothers, Charlie L. Majette of Ahoskie and James Majette of New York City; two sisters, Barbara Majette of Ahoskie and Cleo Merriwither of Pensacola, FL; and eight grandchildren.
