AHOSKIE – Assistance in being a better father is the goal of a new program.

The Fathers in Focus Network is designed to promote responsible fatherhood in Bertie, Hertford, Northampton and Halifax counties.

“Our program is designed to promote responsible fatherhood, strengthen families and enhance the nurturing environment that our children need and deserve,” said Robert Chadwick, Fathers in Focus Developmental Specialist.

The program is operated by the Choanoke Area Development Association (CADA) thanks to funding from the United States Department of Health and Human Services.

The primary age group will be parents 16-30, however, the program will work with any parenting father, a grandparent taking care of his grandchildren or an uncle charged with the care of his nieces/nephews. Fathers can be married, single or expecting.

Chadwick will be available for fathers wishing to sign up for the program beginning at 6:30 p.m. tomorrow night (Wednesday) at the CADA Building on Academy Street in Ahoskie.

A network of non-profit agencies including law enforcement, juvenile justice and faith-based organizations in the four counties has been established to help with the program.

All participants will be enrolled in a five-month curriculum called Fatherhood Development: A Curriculum for Young Fathers.

The Fathers in Focus Network will assist with the classes, provide transportation and coordinate services.

Fathers will participate in peer meetings, bonding events with their children, workshops and recognition events.
