AHOSKIE – The hole was too deep.
In Senior American Legion baseball action here Thursday night, Ahoskie Post 102 surrendered seven runs in the early going before finally getting on the scoreboard and eventually dropped a 15-3 decision to visiting Edenton Post 40.
The loss drops Post 102 to 2-13 overall and 1-6 in conference play.
Trailing 7-0, Ahoskie scratched for its first run in the bottom of the fifth inning. There, Grayson Toms signaled to center and, two outs later, was joined on the bases by Joe Harrell (single) and Eli Spruill (walk). Toms trotted home when Josh Morris drew a bases-loaded walk.
After the visitors plated one run in the top of the sixth and added four more one inning later to pad their lead to 12-1, Ahoskie tallied a pair of markers in the home half of the seventh. Again, Post 102 packed the sacks thanks to walks to Harrell and Spruill and a single off the bat of P.J. Schwab. Brent Bowen then delivered a two-run single to leftfield, scoring Harrell and Spruill.
Post 40 ended the scoring with three runs in the top of the eighth.
Led by Harrell’s two hits, Ahoskie finished the game with seven safeties. Toms, Spruill, Schwab, Bowen and Dylan Ralph added one hit each.
Bowen, who worked the game’s first two innings on the mound, was charged with the pitching loss.
Due to canceled games this weekend at Durham and at Garner, Post 102 will not play again until Wednesday when they travel to Winterville for an outing at Pitt County Post 160.
Ahoskie will close their season on Thursday with a 7 p.m. home game against Edgecombe County Post 316.
