Four charged with sex crimes

WINTON – Four people were arrested on charges stemming from two unrelated instances of child sexual abuse against two separate girls here this week.

In the first occurrence, the Hertford County Sheriff’s Department arrested one man June 14 after officials with the Department of Social Services had reported the sexual abuse of a 14-year-old girl on May 16.

Frederick Earl Smith, 36, of 109 Drum Street in Como, was charged with five counts of first degree rape of a child, two counts of first degree sex offense of a child and seven counts of sex offense by a parental role.

He is being held in the Hertford County Detention Center under a $2.1 million bond.

Smith’s next court date is set for June 24.

On June 18, charges were brought against three people for the sexual abuse of a 15-year-old girl.

In this instance, David Lee Moore, 34, of 1009 Ahoskie-Cofield Road, was charged with one Class B1 felony count of statutory rape.

Moore was placed under a $100,000 cash bond.

Carol Burnett Freeman, 39, of 1309 East Maple Street in Ahoskie, was also arrested.

She was charged with felony child abuse as a sexual act and placed under a $50,000 cash bond.

Raheem R. Woodley, 21, of 110 Denzel Drive in Cofield, was also charged with a Class B1 felony count of statutory rape and placed under a $90,000 secured bond.

&uot;I’d like to commend investigating officers Brian Pierce and Lieutenant Will Liverman as well as the arresting officers for their hard work in bringing these people in… It’s a sad situation when things like this happen,&uot; stated Hertford County Sheriff Juan Vaughan.

The next court date for all three of the second set of alleged offenders is set for June 24.
