Dorothy D. Viersen

AHOSKIE – Dorothy Dukes Viersen, 85, of the 900 Block of Curtis Street, died Sunday June 8, 2008 at Guardian Care of Ahoskie.

She was a native of Hertford County, the daughter of the late Paul Eley Dukes and Carrie Rawls Dukes, a graduate of Ahoskie High School, a lifetime member of First Baptist Church Ahoskie.

A celebration service of Mrs. Viersen’s life will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday June 10, 2008 at Garrett Funeral Home Ashley Chapel with Rev. Dr. Jesse Croom and Rev. Daniel Glaze officiating.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 64 years; Donald L. Viersen, one daughter; Donna V. Whaley and husband Jimmy, Virginia Beach, Va, one son; Lee Viersen, Jr. and wife Becky, Cary.

One grandson; Paul Viersen.

Victor R. Sumner

BATTLEBORO – Victor Rowe Sumner, 81, of the 400 block of Morningstar Church Road, and formerly of Ahoskie, died Saturday June 7, 2008 surrounded by family and friends at Nash Health Care Systems, Rocky Mount.

Vick was born in Hertford County June 24, 1926 and was the son of the late John Quincy and Lydia Rowe Sumner. He was predeceased by his parents, a sister; Janet Sumner Parker, a grandson; Matthew Noah Davenport.

He graduated from Ahoskie High School, and was an Army Veteran of WW II. He was employed by Wholesale Tire Company, and Colony Tire Company of Ahoskie, was a dedicated longtime member of the Ahoskie Lions Club, and Ahoskie United Methodist Church.

He loved surf fishing, cooking on his grill, and spending time with family and friends and was a loving husband, father and grandfather.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 59 years; Grace Eason Sumner, two daughters; Elaine Sumner Ray and husband Ron, Wendell, Dinah Sumner Davenport and husband Ray, Battleboro, three grandchildren; Jennifer Ray Bunn, and husband Bryan, Wendell, Jason Thomas Davenport, Katie Sumner Davenport, Battleboro, two great grandchildren; Chloe Blair Davenport and Stephen Russell Bunn, one sister; Elizabeth Ann Godwin, Portsmouth, Va.

A Memorial Celebration of Vick’s life will be 11:00 AM. Tuesday June 10, 2008 at Garrett Funeral Home Ashley Chapel 205 NC Highway 42 West, Ahoskie, NC. The Rev. Dr. John Dutton and Pastor Adrian Sawyer will be officiating.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home immediately following the services, and suggest memorial donations to Battleboro United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 178 Battleboro, NC 27809 or to Ahoskie United Methodist Church P. O. Box 665 Ahoskie, NC 27910.

Willie S. Taylor

COMO – Willie Simmons Taylor, 86, widow of Howard Kelly Taylor, Sr., died June 7, 2007 at Southampton Memorial Hospital. Born in Southampton County, she was a daughter of the late Samuel Raymond and Odell Bryant Simmons. Mrs. Taylor was retired from Union Camp Corporation as a secretary in the paper mill after 25+ years of service. She was a member of Buckhorn Baptist Church where she served as Sunday school teacher and organist for over 50 years.

Survivors include her daughter, Shera Dare Wheeler of Como; her son, Howard K. Taylor, Jr. of Suffolk, Va.; one sister, Shirley Snead and husband, Bobby, of Franklin; two grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews, including two special nieces, Michele Snead and Kristen Peele.

A funeral service will be conducted Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Wright Funeral Home, Franklin, Va., with the Rev. Thomas Caulkins and the Rev. John Hackney officiating. Interment will follow in Buckhorn Baptist Church Cemetery, Como.

Archibald C. Gay III

GREENVILLE – Archibald Cree “Archie” Gay, III, 39 of 2600 block L.T. Hardee Road Greenville,  formerly of Ahoskie died, Sunday June 8, 2008, at Morehead City.

He was a native of Hertford County, had attended East Carolina University, was a member of Ahoskie United Methodist Church and was employed with Cyber Sharp .net Greenville. He was predeceased by his father; Archibald Cree Gay, Jr.

Graveside services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 11, 2008 at Cedarwood Cemetery, Weldon with Rev. Dr. John Dutton officiating.

Left to cherish his memory are his mother; Mary Dell Gay, Ahoskie, and two sisters; Dell Clayton, Elizabeth City and Virginia Cargile, Williamston.

The family will assemble at the cemetery at 1:45 p.m. Wednesday prior to services.

Myrtle R. Harrison

WINDSOR – Myrtle Rich Harrison, 87, died Saturday, June 7, 2008 at the Brian Center in Windsor.

Harrison was a homemaker and member of Ross Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school for many years.

A funeral will be conducted by the Rev. Gary Mickey on Tuesday, June 10 at Ross Baptist Church at 11 a.m. Burial will be at Edgewood Cemetery.

Survivors include her husband, Elton Harrison of Windsor; one daughter, Iris H. Fisk of Windsor; one son, Ervin Harrison of Windsor; two brothers, Melvin Rich of Deep Run and James Rich of Rockledge, FL; five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from their home on Bull Hill Road.

Joseph Lee Mabine

AHOSKIE – Joseph Lee Mabine died June 5, 2008 at Norfolk Sentara Hospital in Norfolk.

Survivors include his wife, Dessie Mabine of Ahoskie; two sons, Joseph L. Mabine Jr. of Virginia and Clifton Mabine of Ahoskie; four step sons, James, Willie, Johnnie and Albert Crumble, all of Virginia Beach; one daughter, Rebecca Mabine of Virginia Beach; one step daughter, Shirley Crumble, of Virginia Beach; five brothers, James and Theodore Mabine, both of Ahoskie, David and Leroy Mabine, both of Virginia Beach, and Thomas Mabine of Boston, Mass.; two sisters, Odessa Askew and Zenora Watford, both of Ahoskie, twenty grandchildren; and 10 great- grandchildren.

Willie Peebles

CONWAY – Willie M. Peebles, 89, a native of Northampton County, died June 4, 2008 at her residence.

Survivors include one son, Walter Peebles of Conway; one daughter, Barbara Alexander of Somerpoint, NJ; and three sisters; Eula Everette and Inez Majette, both of Conway; and Cora Parks of Philadelphia, Pa.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Allen Chapel AME, by the Rev. Edward Sloan.

Burial will be at the Deloatch Family Cemetery.

Doris B. Wiggins

SUNBURY – Doris Blanchard Wiggins, 89, died June 6, 2008, in her home.

A long-time member of Beulah Baptist Church, she had worked in the junior department for many years, served as president of the W.M.U. and was a member of the Mary Magdalene Sunday school class

A funeral will be conducted Tuesday at 11 a.m. in Beulah Baptist Church by the Revs. Ron Parr and Joe Cockrell. Burial will be at Damascus Christian Church Cemetery. Friends may join the family in the social hall of Beulah Baptist Church following services and all other times at the residence.

James William Bain

PETERSBURG, Va. – James William “Jim” Bain, 19 of Dinwiddie, Va., passed away Friday, June 6, 2008.

Jim was born in Roanoke Rapids. He is survived by his parents, Michael and Jenny Bain Barnes of Pendleton; brothers, Michael T. Barnes (Nikki) of Ahoskie, Justin Barnes and David Barnes of Pendleton; grandparents, Gloria Shell Bain of Dinwiddie, Va., Billy Bain (Linda Hass) of Dinwiddie, Va., Joe and Rachel Wynnberry of Sarasota, Fl. and Arthur and Sandra Green of Colonial Heights, Va.; great-grandmother, Virginia Shell of Roanoke Rapids; aunts and uncles, Joe Bain of Colonial Heights, Va., Barbara Hale (Dennis) of Church Road, Va., Carolyn Bain of Chester, Va. and Christi Murphy (Art) of Summerfield, NC; nieces, Kayla and Cassidy; special cousin and friend, Matthew Bain; close friend, Jerome Robinson; and his church family at Sappony Baptist Church.

Jim was recently predeceased by his grandmother, Christianna B. Barnes.

A memorial service will be conducted at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, June 10, at the Petersburg Chapel of J. T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home & Cremation Service with the Rev. Jim Stone officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.
