Wreck claims life

HARRELLSVILLE – A two-car accident claimed the life of a Greenville man here Sunday.

Joseph L. Woolard, 62, was pronounced dead at the scene Sunday afternoon shortly after his black Mercedes pulled into the path of an oncoming vehicle.

According to Sgt. T.R. Crumpler of the North Carolina Highway Patrol, Woolard was traveling east on N.C. 561 at approximately 10:13 a.m. His vehicle apparently made a left turn at the intersection of N.C. 561 and N.C. 45 and pulled into the path of an oncoming vehicle.

That vehicle was a Ford passenger van that was traveling south on N.C. 45. It was driven by Kenneth W. Sharpe of Harrellsville and collided with the driver door of the Mercedes, according to the report.

Estimated damage to the Mercedes was $16,000 while the van reportedly suffered $2,000 worth of damage.

The fatal accident was the fourth in Hertford County this year, claiming a total of seven lives.
