Betty B. Harris

VIRGINIA BEACH – Betty Brake Harris, 86, a native of Bertie County, died March 10, 2008, in her home. She was the widow of Willie Rogers Harris.

Mrs. Harris was a former member of the Assembly of God Church.

Survivors include her daughter, Barbara Harris Dauber; two sons, Vincent Harris and Dan Lee Harris, both of Virginia Beach; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Lynnhaven Chapel, with the Rev. Fred Watkins. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.hollomon-brown.com.

Nora Mebane

NORFOLK, Va. – Nora Mebane, a native of Harrellsville, died March 7, 2008. She was the widow of Walter Mebane Sr.

Mrs. Mebane had worked as a nurses aide at Lafayette Villa.

Survivors include two sons, Michael G. Mebane and Walter Mebane Jr.; a sister, Annie Jernigan; two brothers, Donnell Charity and Bobby Walker; and a granddaughter.

A funeral will be conducted at noon Thursday in First Baptist Lamberts Point, 1268 W. 38th St. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park. Graves Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. www.gravesfuneralhome.com.

Julius Bryant

MT. OLIVE n Julius Bryant, died February 10, 2008 at Glen Care Manor, Mt. Olive.

A memorial service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday at Reynolds Funeral Home Chapel, Ahoskie. Burial will be in the family cemetery.

He is survived by one brother, Joseph L. Bryant of Spotsylvania, Md.

Charles Hill

MIDLOTHIAN, Va. n Charles Hill, died March 7, 2008 at St. Francis Medical Center, Richmond, Va.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Philippi Baptist Church, Cofield. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Hill was a member of St. Martins Epistople Church, NYC.

Survivors include his wife, Ruby B. Hill of Midlothian; two daughters, Beverly Murray of Richmond and Carol Ann Hill of Midlothian; two grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Percy Anderson

ENFIELD n Percy Anderson, 59, died March 10, 2008 at Halifax Regional Medical Center, Roanoke Rapids.

James F. Johnson Sr.

NORFOLK – James F. Johnson Sr., 89, a native of Bertie County, died March 11, 2008. He was the widower of Melva Walker Johnson.

Johnson was a member of Bank Street Memorial Baptist Church, Norfolk. He retired from the Naval Supply Center and later retired from the U.S. Post Office where he was a mail handler for more than 20 years.

Survivors include one daughter, Dr. Melva Delores Burke of Queens, N.Y.; two sons, Tommy F. Hoggard of Hampton and James F. Johnson Jr. of Pomona, N.Y.; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Metropolitan Funeral Service, 7246 Granby St. Interment will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Norfolk. Family and friends will assemble at the funeral home. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.metropolitanfuneralservice.com.

Martha P. Baker

HUBBARD, TEXAS: Martha Blanche Perry Baker, 89, formerly of Colerain, NC, died March 7, 2008, in Hillsboro, TX.

Mrs. Baker was born July 20, 1918 in Wakelon, NC. the daughter of the late Lee O. and Vera L. Perry. She was raised in North Carolina and was a longtime resident of the state, but had lived in Hubbard, TX. since 1984. Mrs. Baker was a homemaker and a member of Colerain Baptist Church. She was the window of George W. Baker who died in 2003. Besides her husband she was predeceased by two sons; Spencer Perry Baker in 1992 and Ralph Baker in 2004, and three brothers and three sisters.

Left to cherish her memory is a son; Arnold Baker and wife Linda, Hubbard, TX., three sisters; Carolyn Lassiter, Manteo, NC., Elsie Williams and Esther Perry both of Colerain, NC., one brother; Wallace Perry Colerain, NC., four grandchildren; Hal Baker, Liberty, NC., Ross Baker and wife Karen, Georgetown, TX., Perry Baker, Richmond, VA., Susan Sheppard, Chesapeake, VA., seven great grandchildren, daughters-in-law; Virginia Baker Lux, Wendell, NC., Rita Baker Carlisle, Hubbard, TX.

A celebration service of Mrs. Baker’s life will be 2:00 PM Saturday March 15, 2008 at Garrett Funeral Home Ashley Chapel 205 NC. Highway 42 West, Ahoskie, NC, with Rev. Paul Ange officiating.

Geraldine B. Taylor

AHOSKIE n Geraldine Bazemore Taylor, 68, a native of Bertie County, died March 9, 2008 at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Piney Wood Chapel Baptist Church by the Rev. Matthew Silver. Burial will be in the Taylor family cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

KELFORD n Irish Lendale Howard, 39, died March 9, 2008 at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, Norfolk, Va.

RALEIGH n Calvin Lee Satterwhite, died March 11, 2008 at Rex Health Center, Raleigh.

Satterwhite was a member of Newsome Grove Baptist Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Ymani Satterwhite Worthington of Raleigh; seven sisters, Marybel Watkins of Louisburg, Elizabeth Deloatche of Raleigh, Naomi Singletary of St. Albans, NY, Avoyne Mikula and Mattie Satterwhite, both of Brooklyn, Christine McCullough of Ahoskie and Shirley S. Thompson of Colerain.

Alice Figures

DECATUR, Ga. n Alice Figures, died March 10, 2008 at Dekalb Medical Center, Decatur.

She was a member of Philippi Baptist Church.

Hattie Stephenson

MURFREESBORO n Hattie Stephenson, died March 12, 2008 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 4 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church Murfreesboro by the Rev. Robert Richardson. Burial will be in Carver Park Cemetery, Murfreesboro. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

She was a member of First Baptist Church, Murfreesboro.

She is survived by one sister, Gwendolyn Reid of Murfreesboro.
