Joshua C. Bunch

GATES – Joshua Calvin Bunch, 87, a native of Grant County, Oklahoma, died February 4, 2008, in his home. He was the widower of Phyllis Miller Bunch and Henrietta L. Pierce.

Bunch was a retired CPO first class with 20 years of service in the U.S. Navy, he served in the Pacific Theatre during World War II and was also a veteran of the Korean War. After his military career, he worked with the Elizabeth River Tunnel Commission and was the supervisor of the WIND Program with the Suffolk City Department of Social Services. A member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for 48 years, he held numerous callings which brought him great joy, notably as bishop of the Portsmouth Ward and as branch president of the Ahoskie, Branch. A member of the Gates Senior Citizens Card Club, the Drum Hill Hunt Club and the Gates County Historical Society, he had in years past raced pigeons and bred and showed Siberian Huskies.

Survivors include are three daughters, Becky A. Edens of Gates, Donita Zundel of Elkridge, Md., and Jacque Ferraro of Spring Brooke Township, Pa.; a sister, Thelma L. Miller; and two brothers, David E. Bunch and James L. Bunch, all of Kansas; 14 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 am. Saturday in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Franklin, by Branch President Greg Casper. Burial with military honors will follow in Southampton Memorial Park. Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main St., Gatesville, is in charge. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to any chapter of the American Cancer Society.

Jessie Kelly Futrell

AULANDER – Jessie Kelly Futrell, 62, died February 1, 2008.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in Wilder’s Funeral Home Chapel, Rich Square.

Hubert M. Forehand

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – Hubert M. Forehand, 82, a native of Chowan County, died February 4, 2008, in Windsor. He was the widower of Dorothy Maxey Forehand.

Forehand was a member of Green Lakes Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, trustee and on numerous committees. He retired from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard where he provided exemplary service as supervisor of Electrical Shop 51 for more than 30 years. Prior to this, he served his country on the front lines during the Korean War. Returning home, he enrolled in Old Dominion University and work at the shipyard. Survivors include his sister, Mary F. Partin of Edenton; and a niece.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton. Burial will be in Ballard’s Bridge Baptist Church Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Ballard’s Bridge Baptist Church, 3025 Virginia Road, Tyner, NC 27980 or to one’s favorite charity.

Ann H. Drake

COLERAIN n Ann Marie Hurrell Drake, 64, of the 100 block of Small Circle, died Monday, February 4, 2008, in Sentara Obici Hospital.

Mrs. Drake was born in Port Clinton, Ohio, a daughter of the late George Leonard and Emma Warner Hurrell. Ann was a member of St. Charles Catholic Church, was a graduate of Mary Mance College in Ohio, and had retired as a public school teacher after more than 44 years.

Left to cherish her memory is her husband, Jean Charles Drake; two sons, John Drake of New Bern, NC, and Jason Drake of Camp Lejeune, Jacksonville, NC; a brother George Leonard Hurrell, II of Port Clinton, Ohio; and grandchildren Julian Drake, Jewel Drake, Jack Drake, Joshua Drake and Justice Drake.

A funeral mass will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 12, 2008, at St. Charles Catholic Church, Ahoskie, with the Rev. Thomas McGee, O.S.F.S. officiating.  Burial will follow in Highland Memorial Gardens.  The family will receive friends at Garrett Funeral Home, 205 NC Highway 42 West, Ahoskie, on Monday, February 11, from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m.  Flowers are welcome or memorial donations may be made to St. Charles Catholic Church.

Alvin J. Vaughan

MURFREESBORO n Alvin Junior “Mada” Vaughan, a native of Hertford County, died January 30, 2008 at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

Vaughan was a fork lift driver at Narricott Manufacturing Company. He was a member of Revelle Hill Baptist Church.

Survivors include his parents, Vivian Vaughan Taylor and Curtis Taylor of Murfreesboro; a son, Tylik Vaughan of Woodland; a daughter, Keyisha Vaughan of Potecasi; three sisters , Lakesha Vaughan of Charlotte and Alvina Spellman and Towanda Harris, both of Greenville; his grandfather, Columbus Vaughan of Woodland; and his grandmother, Betty Lou Robertson Vaughan of Murfreesboro.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Revelle Hill Baptist Church by the Rev. Jane Mann. Burial will be in Cladie Ambrose Memorial Gardens.

Alberta P. Bates

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – Alberta P. &uot;Aunt Alberta&uot; Bates, 91, a native of Portsmouth, died February 3, 2008, in her residence. She was the widow of Raymond Bates.

Mrs. Bates was a charter member of Centennial Park Baptist Church, Portsmouth where she was an usher and a member of the Eliza Hairston Missionary Society.

Survivors include four sisters, Thelma Smallwood and Nelphia Bazemore, both of Windsor, Dorothy Purvis of Norfolk and Emaline Manson of Williamston; and two brothers, George L. Bazemore of Portsmouth and Henry Freeman of Windsor.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Fisher Funeral Home Chapel, Portsmouth, by the Rev. Charles Beamon. Interment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Chesapeake. Condolences may be offered at www.fisherfuneral.com.

Charles Holloman

MIDLOTHIAN, Va. n Charles Thomas “Tommy,” “Tom” Holloman, 68, a native of Northampton County, died January 30, 2008 in Chesterfield. He was the widower of Jeanette Townsend Holloman.

A service was held at Bennett Funeral Home in Chesterfield on Saturday. Burial was in Cool Spring Christian Church Cemetery, Keysville, Va.

Holloman graduated from Jackson High and later graduated college from N.C. State in Raleigh.

Survivors include two sisters, Edith Drewette and Lorene Herring; and three brothers, Jerry Holloman, Eugene Holloman and Bill Holloman.

Willie L. Wiggins Sr.

MURFREESBORO n Willie Lee Wiggins, Sr., 74, a native of Statesville, Va., died February 3, 2008 at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

A funeral will be held on Saturday, February 9, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. at Mt. Sinai Baptist Church, Como, NC. The Rev. Elliot Hill, pastor and the Rev. Shirley Johnson, will do the eulogy. Burial will be in the church cemetery. There will be a wake Friday, February 8, 2008 from 7 to 8 p.m. at Hertford County Undertakers Funeral Home, Winton.

Survivors include his wife, Inez D. Wiggins of Murfreesboro, NC; one daughter, Jennifer R. Wiggins of Durham, NC; three sons, Danny Wiggins and Lee Wiggins, Jr., both of Maryland, stepson, Robert Powell of Florida; one daughter-in-law, Brenell Wiggins of Maryland; four sisters, Lessie M. Bynum of Philadelphia, Pa., Ersue Williams of Petersburg, Va., Otelia Willis of Woodland, NC, and Florine Pearson of Murfreesboro, NC; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

POWELLSVILLE n James Lewis, died February 5, 2008 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Saturday at First Baptist Church Powellsville by the Rev. White. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Survivors include his wife, Mildred Lewis of Powellsville; and one sister, Sarah Pryor of Hampton, Va.

Charlie W. Brown

WINFALL n Charlie W. Brown, 52, a native of Gates, died February 1, 2008 at his residence.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Joppa Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Robert Wilkins. Burial will be in the Kee family cemetery, Hobbsville. A wake will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Hertford County Undertakers Chapel, Gates.

Survivors include a son, Antonio Smith of Suffolk, Va.; one daughter, Natasha Copeland of Maryland; three brothers, Willie Brown of Pennsylvania, Stephen Brinkley and Bernice Brinkley Sr. of Elizabeth City; eight sisters, Jeanetta Brown of Greenville, Janice Boone of CA, Dianne Brown and Mary Henry, both of Sunbury, Shelia Faye Brown of Hertford, Brenda Jordan of Winfall, Margaret A. Brown and Cathy Blow of Gates; a foster sister, Essie Mae Felton of Gates; and nine grandchildren.

ROANOKE RAPIDS n Jacqueline M. Reaves, 42, died February 4, 2008 at Halifax Regional Medical Center, Roanoke Rapids.

A visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, with the funeral service beginning at 12 noon Saturday in the Roanoke Rapids Chapel of H.D. Pope Funeral Home by the Rev. Richard Webb.
