Trojans handle Lady Rams

CREEKSVILLE – Dominique Peebles scored 13 points for Northampton County High School n East Thursday night.

Unfortunately for the home-standing Lady Rams, Jona-leigh Balmer countered with 31 for Southeast Halifax and the Lady Trojans secured a 63-40 varsity girls’ basketball victory.

Southeast jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, but Northampton got back-to-back buckets from Peebles and Patrice Williams to tie the score.

After the Trojans pushed back to the lead behind a triple and deuce from Shaveon Boone, they took an 11-4 lead, but Northampton fought back with buckets from Brittany Boone and Williams to close within 11-8.

Southeast scored the next nine points to lead 20-8 early in the second period.

The Lady Rams again tried to battle back with Williams, Ashley Boyce and Peebles all scoring to close the gap to 20-14.

After a free throw from Clarese McDaniel, Southeast led 21-14, but the advantage wasn’t secure.

Peebles and Williams each converted shots from the free throw line and Shakira Shoulars scored to trim the deficit to 21-19 with 3:02 to play in the second quarter.

The Lady Trojans took control of the rest of the period, however, going on a 9-0 spurt that was led by five points from Balmer, to hold a 30-19 lead at the intermission.

East tried to rally back in the third quarter when the Lady Rams scored six of the first eight points to get as close as seven (32-25).

With the lead already back to 10 late in the quarter, Southeast Halifax managed the final three scores of the third quarter to hold a comfortable 43-29 working margin heading into the final period.

Southeast got the lead to 45-29 after a Miguetta Wright hoop, but Peebles drilled a three-pointer and Boone added a deuce to help the Rams get back within 11 points (45-34).

Southeast, however, went on a 14-2 spurt to close out the game and claimed the Tar-Roanoke Conference victory.

In addition to Peebles’ 13 points, the Lady Rams got eight each from Williams and Boone and five from Boyce.

Shaveon Boone had 10 points for Southeast Halifax while McDaniel added nine points and Wright had six.

After taking Friday off, Northampton-East will be back at home on Tuesday when they welcome Louisburg.
