AHOSKIE – It took Hertford County five minutes to score.

At that point, E.T. Beddingfield High School’s varsity girls already had put 15 points on the board and held a commanding lead.

The Lady Bruins rolled on to a 65-26 win over HCHS in a non-conference basketball game Wednesday night.

The loss came despite 15 points from Briante Bond, who led the Lady Bears in scoring.

Early on the contest was dominated by Beddingfield’s Jean Best. The Lady Bruin scored the first eight points of the game to pave the way for her 18 points for the evening.

After Best’s eight consecutive points, the Lady Bruins got two buckets from Monique Spry sandwiched around a three-pointer off the hands of Casey Elliott. Spry led all scorers with 22 points while Elliott was also in double digits with 10 points.

It was Bond who finally ended the HCHS drought when she scored with three minutes to play.

Elliott had a bucket and Spry added two free throws to give Beddingfield a 19-2 lead after one quarter.

Bond scored again to open the second quarter, but Best and Ancia Dial combined to lead Beddingfield on an 8-0 run that gave the visitors a 27-4 advantage.

Bond then led HCHS on a 6-0 spurt, scoring four points while Raqueta Moore added the other bucket. The streak closed the Lady Bears to within 27-10.

The teams exchanged scores before the half, leaving the Bears behind 29-12 at the intermission.

Beddingfield opened the third quarter with a 9-0 spurt that pushed them to a commanding 38-12 lead.

Hertford County got a hoop from Joya Hardy with four minutes to play in the period to end their scoreless run and Bond added a hoop moments later, but the Lady Bruins ended the period with a 46-18 lead.

Beddingfield scored the first seven points of the fourth period to take a 53-18 advantage and was able to cruise to victory from there.

The Lady Bears will be at home today (Saturday) when they welcome Nash Central High School.
