James W. Connor
WINDSOR n James Warren Connor, 85, a native of Bertie County, died December 18, 2007 at Pitt Memorial Hospital.
A graveside funeral was conducted Friday at the Connor family cemetery by the Rev. Brian Medlin. Military rites were observed. Memorial gifts may be made to the Bertie County Rescue Squad, PO Box 74, Windsor, NC 27983. Walker Funeral Home was in charge.
Connor was a retired farmer and a member of Green Cross Baptist Church. He served in the US Army during World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Ellen Bell Conner of the home; two daughters, Patricia C. Copeland and Linda C. White, both of Windsor; a son, James Michael Conner of Clemmons; a sister, Virginia C. Myers of Merry Hill; and four grandchildren.
Joseph Kowalski
SATELLITE BEACH, Fla. – Joseph Albert Kowalski, died on December 14, 2007 at Wuesthosf Hospital in Melbourne.
Kowalski was a graduate Bevard College. He lived in Ahoskie in the 1960s and owned the Etna Station on Memorial Dr. He was retired from Cape Kennedy where he worked as a supervisor. Kiowalski was one of the workers on the Apollo 11’s moon mission, and signed his and Anthony’s name to the microfilm that was left on the moon. He worked for the US overseas in Iran and Saudi Arabia.
He was the Purchasing Agent for the Juddah Airport in Saudi Arabia. The final burial will be on January 8, 2008 in Lapeer Michigan.
Survivors include a son, Anthony Kowalski of Ahoskie; daughters, Cheryl Vander Ven and Natasha Kowalski; a son, Steven Kowalski; and seven brothers and sisters.
Juanita H. Newsome
PORTSMOUTH, Va. – Juanita Louise Hill Newsome, a native of Charleston, S.C., died December 16, 2007. She was the widow of Johnnie “Tom” Newsome.
Survivors include five sons, Larry Capers, William &uot;Chip&uot; DeBurns, Kevin &uot;Pee Wee&uot; DeBurns of Virginia Beach, Clinton DeBurns and Warren DeBurns, both of Portsmouth; four daughters, Violet Rodriguez Britt of Norfolk, Charlesetta &uot;Chico&uot; Watson of Virginia Beach, Harriett Peppers of Richmond, Va., and Felicia &uot;Tuttie&uot; Fisher of Norfolk; 48 grandchildren; great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at noon Saturday in Corprew Funeral Home Chapel, 1822 Portsmouth Blvd., Portsmouth, VA 23704, with the Rev. Michael A. Watson Sr. The interment will be in the Newsome Family Cemetery in Murfreesboro.
Agnes M. Haslett
SUFFOLK, Va. – Agnes Minton Haslett, 90, a native of Bertie County, died December 18, 2007, at Fountains of the Albemarle in Tarboro. She was the widow of Carlton Jones Haslett.
Mrs. Haslett was a longtime member of Suffolk Christian Church.

Brownie B. Johnson
CONWAY n Brownie Barnes Johnson, 87, died Tuesday, December 18, 2007 at Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville. She had been preceded in death by her devoted husband of 65 years, Walter Jennings Johnson, and by her parents, W.H. and Pattie Davis Barnes.
A native of Northampton County, she was a homemaker and was involved in the family businesses, W.J. Johnson Grocery and their cofarming operation.
She is survived by two loving daughters, who were the light of her life and two sons-in-law, whom she loved and depended upon, Linda Johnson Parker and husband, Donald, and Jo Anne Johnson McGee and husband, Rick, all of Woodland; four grandchildren, Gregory Wilson Parker and wife, Heidi of Greenville, Lynn Parker Flanagan and husband, Scott, of Eden, Justin Blake McGee of Raleigh, and Richard Trent McGee of Greenville; two great-grandchildren, Holli Lynn Flanagan and Mallory Scott Flanagan of Eden.
Graveside services will be held Saturday, December 22, 2:00 p.m. in the Town of Conway Cemetery with Rev. Willie McLawhorn and Rev. Sid Collins presiding.
The family received friends at Bridgers Funeral Home, Inc., in Conway, Friday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and appreciate all thoughtfulness extended including gifts of flowers or donations made to the American Diabetes Association, 434 Fayetteville Street Mall, Two Hanover Square, Suite 1650, Raleigh, NC 27601.
James B. Morris
MARGARETTSVILLE n James B. Morris, 82, a native of Southampton County, Va., died December 19, 2007 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at J.W. Faison Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Carroll R. Dickens Sr. Interment will be in Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, Margarettsville.
Morris was a farmer.
Survivors include his wife, Julia Boone Morris of the home; three children, Jenella Barnes of Mt. Olive, Lee Ann Dallas of Murfreesboro and Mary Long of Margarettsville; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Elizabeth H. Tanyer
MURFREESBORO n Elizabeth Hall Tanyer, 72, a native of Bertie County, died December 20, 2007 at Guardian Care Nursing Home, Ahoskie.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Center Grove Baptist Church, Ahoskie, by the Rev. Tommy Kiker. Burial will be in Ahoskie Cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge. In lieu of flowers, please make all donations to Bertie Ambulance Service.
Mrs. Tanyer was a retired farm worker. She was a member of Center Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Teresa P. Evans and Mary E. Gibson; a brother, James Bradley Hall; a sister, Dot Godwin Baines; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
James Vaughan
WOODLAND – James Vaughan, 69, a native of Northampton County, died December 20, 2007 at his residence.
Vaughan was a member of Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church.
He was an auto body mechanic.
Survivors include his wife, Jeanette Vaughan of the home; and two grandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.
