Lady Bears get win number two

AHOSKIE – Hertford County claimed win number two this season.

The Lady Bears’ basketball team defeated Northampton County High School n East for the second time this season to improve to 2-4 for the 2007-2008 campaign. HCHS won 42-31 Saturday night at Ahoskie.

In the first contest between the two non-conference rivals, HCHS pulled away in the fourth quarter to earn victory. Saturday night the Lady Bears started on a 5-2 run and held off a late run from the Lady Rams.

After three free throws, Hertford County’s first hoop came from Amber Moore. She gave the Lady Bears a 5-0 lead with that score, but Domonique Peebles and Patrice Williams had back-to-back hoops for East to get them within 5-4.

From there, the Lady Bears scored the next 10 points to take a commanding 15-4 advantage.

Briante Bond started the spurt with a hoop midway through the quarter. She was followed by consecutive hoops from Moore. Bond and Jalisa Chinn added the final two baskets of the spurt.

Northampton stopped the spurt with a Williams bucket, but Hertford County went on another tear, this time outscoring Northampton 8-0. Raqueta Moore got the first deuce and was followed by a three-pointer from Bond and a hoop by Bardreda Williams. Raqueta Moore had the final point with a free throw that made it 23-6.

The Lady Rams got a free throw by Alicia Piland and a Brittany Boone bucket to get within 23-9 at the intermission.

The lead stayed basically at the same level through the third period with HCHS holding a 30-15 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Shakira Shoulars got the fourth stated well for East with her hoop, but it took a 9-3 run over the final minutes of the game to get the Rams back to within 15.
