Patsy T. Peay

PALM COAST, Fla. n Patsy Peay, 68, a native of Aurora, died December 4, 2007.

A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Wickline Center, 341 S. 7t St., Flagler Beach, Fla. Please send donations to Stuart F. Meyer Hospice House, 150 Memorial Parkway, Palm Coast, FL 32164 or The American Cancer Society, 1620 S. Clyde Morris Blvd., Daytona Beach, FL 32219, instead of flowers.

Mrs. Peay was a housewife and mother.

Survivors include her husband, John Peay of Palm Coast; their sons, Jeffrey Howell of Jacksonville, Jay Peay of Eure; three grandchildren; her sisters, Bernice Hopkins of Washington, Fay Smith of Vanceboro, and Betsy Slade of Washington; and her brother, Larry Tingen of Washington.

James O. Ruffin

RALEIGH – James Otis Ruffin, 57, died December 1, 2007.

A funeral was held Friday in First Baptist, Severn. Carlton L. Gray Funeral & Cremations Services was in charge.

Alcora W. Wiggins

GATES – Alcora Winslow &uot;Cora&uot; Wiggins, 87, a native of Perquimans County, died December 5, 2007, in Southampton Memorial Hospital, Franklin, Va.

Mrs. Wiggins was a homemaker, she had in years past farmed with her beloved husband, the late John Herman Wiggins Sr., had served as a &uot;plane-spotter&uot; during World War II, had graded tobacco and had worked with the Gates County Board of Elections. A member of Reynoldson Baptist Church, she had been a member of its choir, had served as the secretary of the Adult Ladies Sunday school class, and was active in the Women’s Missionary Union.

Survivors include a daughter, Mary Edlar Buck; two sons, J. Herman Wiggins Jr. and Keith Allen Wiggins, both of Gates; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 4 p.m. Saturday at Reynoldson Baptist Church by the Rev. Todd Higginson and the Rev. Billy Presley. A private family burial will follow in the church cemetery. Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main St., Gatesville, is in charge.

Ruth Spivey

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Ruth Spivey, died December 3, 2007.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday in Zion Tabernacle Baptist Church, Corapeake. Hale Funeral Home is in charge.

Sadie Briscoe

SEABOARD n Sadie Mae Cox Briscoe, 86, a native of Northampton County, died December 5, 2007 at Halifax Regional Medical Center, Roanoke Rapids.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Seaboard Baptist Church in Seaboard by the Rev. Steve Trussell. Burial will be in Seaboard Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Seaboard Baptist Church Brotherhood, Seaboard, NC 27876. Massey Funeral Home Jackson, is in charge.

Mrs. Briscoe was a member of Seaboard Baptist Church.

Survivors include her sons, Gene Davis of Richmond, Va., Joe Davis of Seaboard and Don Davis of Selma; sisters, Elmyra Husky of Chesapeake, Coretta Martin of Virginia Beach, Bobbette Ford of Phoenix, Arizona and Gloria Williams of Richmond; a brother, Charles Cox of Franklin; seven grandchildren; and 11 grandchildren.

Norma J. Vann

AHOSKIE n Norma

Jean Parker Vann, 67, died December 5, 2007 at her home.

Mrs. Vann was a member of Second Baptist Union Church. She was retired from Roanoke-Chowan Hospital.

Left to cherish her memories are her three children, Jill Vann-Jones (Oscar) of Aulander, Robin Vann-Walker and Harvey “Ric” Vann, both of the home; five grandchildren, Davin “DJ” Walker and Damion “Dan” Walker, both of Winton, Ja’Conda, Chastity and Oscar “Fatty” II, all of Aulander; her mother, Ruby Parker of Ahoskie; her brother, Mr. Charles Parker (Jean); and her sister, Mrs. Teresa Peele, both of Union.

A celebration of life service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Beulah Church of God, the former Second Baptist Union Church. Burial will be in the Vann Family Cemetery, Union. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge of arrangements.

Richard E. Gadsden

WINTON n Richard E. Gadsden, 78, a native of Winton, died December 6, 2007 at RCH, Ahoskie.

Mr. Gadsden was a retired principal of the Hertford County School System and a member of First Baptist Church Winton.

A memorial service will be held December 9, 2007 at 2 p.m. C.S. Brown Cultural Arts Center, Winton, NC. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge of arrangements.

He leaves to cherish his memories, a daughter, Jill Gadsden of Winton, a granddaughter, (his pride and joy) Sandi Goolsby of Winton; one brother, Ben Gadsden (Lucy, Tonja) of Washington, DC; one sister, Evelyn Gadsden Jones (Wendell, Dell, Lisa, Sarah) of Greensboro, NC; one aunt, Alice Nickens of Ahoskie; and many family and friends.

Burial will be at First Baptist Winton Cemetery in Winton, N.C.

James C. Tyler

CHESAPEAKE, Va. n Mr. James Clifton Tyler, died December 4, 2007 at Chesapeake General Hospital.

Tyler was a member of First Baptist Church Logan Park, Norfolk, VA.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 8, 2007 at First Baptist Logan Park, Norfolk, VA, by the Rev. Dr. George H. Spicer. Burial will be in the Martin Family Cemetery, Pendleton, NC. Information submitted by Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc.

Survivors include his wife, Maudie M. Tyler of the home; four sisters, Corinne M. Tyler of Woodland, NC, Bettie T. Vincent of Gaston, NC, Vivian L. Chavis of Winton, NC and Eloise T. Grisby of Washington, DC; one brother, Titus Tyler, Jr. of Woodland, NC; and his mother-in-law, Mary Martin of Pendleton, NC.

William H. Jones

GATES – William Henry Jones,a native of Corapeake, died December 6, 2007.

Deacon Jones was a lifelong member of the New Middle Swamp Missionary Baptist Church in Corapeake.

Survivors include his daughters, Lucy Ann Jones of Gates, Elsie Jones Riddick of Lawrence, Mass., Clementine Jones Felton of Hertford, Margaret Jones Bacchus of Gatesville, Thelma Jones Parker of Gatesville and Martha Virginia Jones Wiggins of Suffolk; sons, William C. Jones of Brooklyn, N.Y., Louis D. Jones of Lawrence, Mass., Herbert L. Jones of Hephzibah, Ga., and Norman N. Jones of Lawrence, Mass.; brother, Charlie A. Jones of Gates; 27 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren.

Jones will be on view from noon to 7 p.m. and wake will be 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at T.E. Cooke-Overton Funeral Home. A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday in New Middle Swamp Missionary Baptist Church in Corapeake.

Eula M. Jones

GRIMESLAND n Eula Mae Askew Jones, 65, a native of Hertford County, died December 5, 2007 at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday at Philippi Baptist Church, Cofield, by Elder Travis Woods. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Mrs. Jones was a housewife and a member of Miracle Temple Church.

Survivors include her daughters, Mary Price of Grimesland and Brenda Grant of Petersburg, Va.; sons Darnell Askew of Ahoskie and Richard Earl Askew of Murfreesboro; sisters, Elsie Marie Riddick of Winton and Eloise White of Baltimore, MD.; brothers, Isaac Askew and Waverly Askew, both of Portsmouth, John Askew of Colerain and Grady Askew of Harrisburg, PA; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Julia S. Boone

BRONX, NY n Julia Sneed Boone, 84, a native of Bertie County, died November 30, 2007 at Montefiore Medical Center.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Metropolitan Interdenominational Church of God, Aulander, by Bishop Anthony Cherry. Burial will be in the Boone family cemetery, Lewiston. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Mrs. Boone was a housewife and a member of Miracle Temple Church.

Survivors include daughters, Lola Mae Boone and Vanessa Boone Baskeville, both of Bronx; a son, McCoy Freeman of Portsmouth; adopted daughter, Elaina Boone of Bronx; adopted son, Victor Boone of Bronx; 19 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and 28 great-great-grandchildren.

Marjorie D. Mathews

MURFREESBORO n Marjorie Dunn Mathews, 72, died December 7, 2007. She was the widow of William Mathews.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Mt. Tabor Baptist Church Cemetery by the Rev. Wint Hale Jr. The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home, Aulander, from 7 until 8:30 p.m. Saturday.

Survivors include her daughter, Nancy Parker of Roxobel; sons, Bobby Matthews and Ricky Matthews, both of Murfreesboro; two brothers, Bennie Dunn of Milwaukee and Jimmy Dunn of Tyner; and two grandchildren.
