Aileen H. Hollowell

TYNER – Aileen Holloman Hollowell, 89, a native of Bertie County, died December 2, 2007, in Chowan Hospital, Edenton.

Mrs. Hollowell was a homemaker, in years past she had worked seasonally and part time in both the Chowan River Fish Company and the Chowan High School cafeteria. A member of Ballard’s Bridge Baptist Church, she had formerly taught children’s Sunday school and was an Adult Choir member for more than 50 years.

Survivors include two daughters, Normaleen H. Holmes of Edenton and Chris H. Petteway of Virginia Beach; a son, Bobby Hollowell of Tyner; a granddaughter; and a great-granddaughter.

A funeral was conducted Wednesday in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, Edenton, by the Revs. Ron Parr and John Wilkinson. Burial followed in Beaver Hill Cemetery. Flowers were accepted and appreciated or contributions in her memory may be made to Ballard’s Bridge Baptist Church, 3025 Virginia Road, Tyner, NC 27980.

Virginia Pope Harris

AHOSKIE n Virginia Pope “Mother Harris” Harris, 77, died December 1, 2007 at the Heritage Hospital Rehabilitation Center in Tarboro. She was the widow of James Thomas Harris.

Mrs. Harris was a member of the Soul Saving Station Evangelistic Center where she served faithfully in many capacities including church mother, assistant pastor, and an eldress.

Survivors include her sons, Leroy Harris of Upper Marlboro, Md. and William Harris of Ahoskie; daughters, Geraldine Deloatche of Ahoskie and Barbara Majette of Philadelphia; sisters, Marie Vick of Middlesex, Elizabeth Pope of Ahoskie, Vivian Baines of Wilson and Dazerene Woodard of Wilson; brothers, James Pope and Nathaniel Pope, both of Middlesex and Ulysses Pope of New York; 10 grandchildren; and

three great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life service will be conducted on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Soul Saving Station Evangelistic Center, Ahoskie.

The family will receive friends at Hunter’s Funeral Home in Ahoskie, Friday evening from 6-8 p.m. Flowers are welcome; however memorial contributions may be made in honor of the James T. Harris Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 607, Ahoskie, NC

Sibyl W. Rawls

MURFREESBORO n Sibyl Shirley Williams Rawls, 85, of the 700 block of Spring Avenue, died Monday, December 3, 2007, in Roanoke Chowan Hospital.

Mrs. Rawls was born in Bertie County, a daughter of the late Clifton and Nancy Hoggard Williams.  She was a member of Carpenter’s Shop Church and a homemaker.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Martha Moore of Emporia, VA, Patricia Parker and husband, Greg, and Barbara Futrell and husband, Paul, of Murfreesboro, and Robin White and husband, Jimmy of Margarettsville, NC; her son, Cliff Walker and wife, Shirley of Conway; seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.  Besides her parents, Mrs. Rawls was predeceased by her first husband, Robert S. Walker.

A celebration of life service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 6, 2007, at Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, with the Rev. Wallace Phillips officiating.  Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Murfreesboro.  The family received friends at the funeral home from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, and other times at the home of her daughter, Patricia Parker, 337 Jay Trail, Murfreesboro, NC.  Flowers are welcome or memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Leroy Manley

CONWAY n Leroy Manley, 76, a native of Northampton County, died December 3, 2007 at Halifax Regional Medical Center.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Second Baptist Creeksville, Murfreesboro, by the Rev. Anthony Rawlings. Burial will be in the Manley family cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Manley was a member of Second Baptist Creeksville Church, janitor of the church, Superintendent of Sunday school, president of Senior Choir for 50 years and custodian for Northampton County School.s.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Deloatch Manley of Conway; daughters, Sandra M. Williams of Conway, Mary M. Jackson of Burlington, NJ, Carol M. Richey of Oxon Hill, Md., and Laura M. Williams of El Paso, Texas; sons, Earl Manley of Ahoskie, Lee Manley of Fort Washington, MD, Roy Manley of Bear, DE and Terry Manley of Kuwait; sisters, Irene Everette of Oak City, Lucille Branch and Willie Mae Walker, both of Murfreesboro; brothers, Linza Manley, John Manley, James Manley and Harvey Manley, all of Conway, Clarence Manley of Murfreesboro and Rommie Manley of Ahoskie; 12 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Maybelle M. Nichols

AULANDER – Mrs. Maybelle Mason Nichols, age 73 died at her home in Aulander on December 5, 2007.

Mrs. Nichols is a native of Bertie County.

She worked for many years as a flea market vender in Ahoskie and more recently in Woodland.

Preceding her in death are her mother and father, Emma Silverthorne Mason and Israel Mason, one son, William Nichols two sisters; Kathleen Perrish and Christine Mason and one brother, Joseph Mason.

Survivors include her daughter, Candice Driver and her husband Kenneth of Aulander, her son, Norwood Nichols and his wife Joann of Kinston, one stepdaughter, Joyce Faye Sauls and her husband Billy of Snow Hill. Also surviving are ten grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, December 7, 2007 at 2 P.M. at the Chapel of Sykes Funeral Service in Rich Square with the Rev. David Foster officiating.

The family will receive friends at Sykes Funeral Service from 1:00-1:45 P.M. prior to the service on Friday.

Richard A. Jones

TARBORO n Richard Allan Jones, 64, a native of Corapeake, died December 4, 2007.

A service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday at Howard Memorial Presbyterian Church. Memorials may be sent to Howard Memorial Presbyterian Church, 303 E. St. James St., Tarboro, NC 27886. Jones graduated from Sunbury High School and East Carolina University. He served as a member of the U.S. Marine Corps. He worked for Carolina Telephone and Sprint at its Tarboro office for 33 years.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Warren Jones of Tarboro; a son, Richard Warren Jones of Tarboro; a daughter, Laura Ashley Jones of Raleigh; a brother, Jimmy “JJ” Jones of Sneads Ferry; and a sister, Lu Ann Jones of Tampa, Fla.

Fred M. Hill, Jr.

AHOSKIE – Fred Martin Hill, Jr., 77, a native of Edgecombe County, died December 5, 2007 in his home.

Hill was had served for 32 years with the Ahoskie Fire Department, and was Fire Chief for 12 years. He was a member of

First Presbyterian Church, where he served as an Elder,

a member of Davie Masonic Lodge, # 39 AF & AM a member of the Sudan Shrine Temple New Bern, and Scottish Rite Enfield. He was also a member of the N.C. State Fireman’s Association.

A memorial service will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church by Rev. Richard Rice. The family will receive friends at Garrett Funeral Home, 205 N.C Highway 42 West, Ahoskie, from 7-8:30 p.m. Friday and other times at the home. Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Askew Hill; four sons; Steve Hill, Charles Hill, and Ashley Hill, all of Ahoskie and Martin Hill, Windsor; one sister, Elizabeth Savin of Ahoskie; four granddaughters; and one stepgrandson.

Norma J. Vann

AHOSKIE n Norma J. Vann, died December 5, 2007 at her residence.
