Warriors topple Northeast

LASKER – Lawrence Academy had three players score in double figures as the Warriors rolled to a 65-42 victory over Northeast Academy Friday night.

“It’s always good to get that first conference win,” said Lawrence Head Coach Tommy Tripp afterwards.

Daniel Oliver led all scorers with 21 points. Shane Stevens added 14 points and R. J. Deppish followed with 10 points and 10 boards.

Despite the win, Tripp saw room for improvement.

“We had 16 turnovers, which is too many,” he stressed. “We did quite well passing the ball and had 18 assists.”

The Warriors also dominated the boards, out-rebounding the Eagles 41-22.

Oliver scored the first bucket of the night, but a basket from Josh Jenkins and two by Jeremy Parker gave Northeast a 6-2 lead.

Lawrence scored 10 unanswered points over the next five minutes to take the lead, 12-6. Jenkins converted a three-point play to end the Lawrence scoring run, but the Warriors started another one, scoring 11 straight points to extend their lead to 14 (23-9).

John Pope took Hall Edward’s pass to the hoop for Northeast, ending the Warriors drive, but a layup by Stevens and a basket from Joe Harrell answered the Eagles points.

Jenkins split the defenders for two then Brandon Futrell sank the inbounds pass from Jenkins for three, cutting the Warriors lead to 12 (28-16) at the half.

Three pointers from Pope and Parker sandwiched a trey by Harrell.

Lawrence scored the next 14 points, including three treys and a bucket by Oliver, stretching their lead to 23 (45-22).

Jenkins scored the final six Northeast points of the quarter, but an Oliver basket and two T.J. Johnston foul shots kept the Warriors out front, 49-28.

Northeast missed seven foul shots in the final quarter as Lawrence outscored the Eagles 16-15 over the final eight minutes to take the 65-42 victory.

Jenkins led Northeast with 13 points and six rebounds.

Jeremy Parker followed with seven points.

“We had a lot of really good looks in the first half, but couldn’t get anything to fall,” according to Northeast Head Coach John Brown.

The Eagles shot 19 percent from the floor.

The Junior Varsity boys were also victorious, handing Northeast a 41-22 loss.
