Edmond J. Acree, Jr.

AULANDER n Edmond Joseph “Joe” Acree, Jr., 83, of the 700 block of East Main Street, died Thursday, November 29, 2007.

Mr. Acree was born in Bertie County, a son of the late Edmond Joseph, and Hattie Joyner Acree.  He was a member of Aulander Baptist Church, where he was also a former deacon and taught Sunday school for 15 years. A graduate of East Carolina University and was retired as Assistant Superintendent of Bertie County Public Schools.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Nancy Dunning Acree; a daughter, Betsy A. Baker and husband, Jerry of Kill Devil Hills; a son, Edmond Joseph Acree, III and his wife, Donna of Aulander; and a brother, James R. Acree of Aulander.  Also surviving are two grandchildren, Brian Acree of Aulander, and Carole Baker of Wilmington, NC.

A celebration of life service was conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, December 3, 2007, at Aulander Baptist Church with the Rev. Jerry Johnson officiating.  Burial followed in Aulander Cemetery.  The family received friends at the home.  Flowers are welcome, or memorial donations may be made to Aulander Baptist Church, 109 Harmon Street, Aulander, NC, 27805.

Donald O. Jones

AHOSKIE n Donald Oakey Jones, 74, a native of Bertie County, died December 1, 2007, at his home.

Jones was a member of Powellsville Baptist Church and an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict.  He was a retired painter with Atlantic Yacht Basin.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Earley Jones; two daughters, Donna Jones Pethtel of Kingston, GA, and Debbie Sager McGanty of Virginia Beach, VA; two sisters, Bruce Ann Martin of Conway and Barbara Jean Baldwin of Chattanooga, TN; two brothers, Cecil Bernard “Bernie” Jones of Ahoskie, and John Dew “J.D.” Jones of Powellsville; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life service was conducted Monday at Powellsville Baptist Church by the Rev. Kevin Copeland.  Burial followed in Highland Memorial Gardens, with military honors.  Flowers are welcome or memorial donations may be made to Community Home Care & Hospice, 107 West Boulevard, Williamston, NC, 27892, or to Powellsville Baptist Church.Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, was in charge.

Patricia S. Ullom

EDENTON – Patricia Smith &uot;Patty&uot; Ullom, 70, a native of Norfolk County, Va., died December 2, 2007 in her home.

Mrs. Ullom was a homemaker, she was a member of Warwick Baptist Church in Hobbsville and Victory Chapter No. 16, the Order of the Eastern Star in Portsmouth. Survivors include her husband, Charles M. Ullom; two daughters, Rochelle Hupp and Debbie Miller; a son, William J. &uot;Billy&uot; Ullom, all of Edenton; two sisters, Frances McCoy and Lillie Belle Quillon, both of Chesapeake; and six grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Warwick Baptist Church by the Rev. John Wilkinson. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton, is in charge. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to the American Cancer Society’s McConnell-Raab Hope Lodge, 930-A Wellness Drive, Greenville, NC 27834.

Junius Cotton

HALIFAX n Junius “June” Cotton, 53, of Gumberry, died November 29, 2007 at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

A funeral will be held at 12 noon Tuesday at the Roanoke Rapids Chapel by Pastor James P. Perkins. Interment will be in Chapel Grove Cemetery, Garysburg. H.D. Pope Funeral Home, Roanoke Rapids, is in charge.

Anthony Hill

WINDSOR n Anthony Hill, 54, died November 29, 2007 at the VA Medical Center, Durham.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Mt. Ararat Baptist Church. Burial will be in Basemore family Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 7-8 p.m. Tuesday at Gilliam Funeral Home.

Ruth S. Gaskins

MERRY HILL n Ruth Slade Gaskins, 91, died November 30, 2007 at Pitt County Hospital, Greenville.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at Ashland Missionary Baptist Church, Merry Hill. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A viewing will be held one hour prior to services. Gilliam Funeral Home, Windsor, is in charge.
