Mary S. Harvey

GATES – Mary Saunders Harvey, 86, of Sarem Road, died November 24, 2007.

A funeral will be held at noon Wednesday in New Hope Missionary Baptist Church. Stallings Funeral Home is in charge.

Ophelia W. Miles

NEWSOMS, Va. – Ophelia White Miles, 98, a native of Aulander, died November 25, 2007. She was the widow of George Thomas Miles.

Mrs. Miles attended Chowan College and Wake Forest College. She retired as a bookkeeper for Miles Truck Line, and a former member of the Newsoms Woman’s Club. Ophelia was a member of Newsoms Baptist Church, the Homemakers Class, and past president of the WMU.

She is survived by a brother, Benjamin Harvey White of Raleigh.

A graveside service was conducted Tuesday in Hollywood Cemetery, Newsoms, with the Rev. Jason Wise. Memorials may be made to Newsoms Baptist Church, P.O. Box 312, Newsoms, VA 23874 or Boykins Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 347, Boykins, VA 23827. Wright Funeral Home was in charge.

James H. Archer

MURFREESBORO n James Herod Archer, 94, a native of Hertford County, died October 6, 2007, at Roanoke Chowan Hospital.

Archer was retired as a District of Columbia law enforcement officer.  He was a member of the D.C. Retired Law Enforcement Officers Association and South Winton Baptist Church.

Survivors include his daughters, Norma Yvonne Archer Carter of Richmond, VA and Joyce Ann Archer Turpin of Silver Spring, MD; his sister, Christine Archer Luffborough of Norfolk, VA; a granddaughter; and four great-grandchildren.

A memorial celebration of life service will be conducted on Mr. Archer’s birthday, December 1 at 1 p.m. at Garrett Funeral Home, 205 NC Highway 42 West, Ahoskie.

Marie T. Faison

LEWISTOWN RD.

n Marie T. Faison, 68, a native of Hertford County, died November 23, 2007 at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

A funeral was conducted Wednesday at New Haven Baptist Church by the Rev. Lloyd Gatling. Burial was in the church cemetery. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, was in charge.

Survivors include five children, Walter A. Bell of Westchester, Pa, Richard Bell, Christopher C. Bell, Phillip M. Bell and Phillip Bell Jr., all of Murfreesboro; two brothers, William C. Tyler of Philadelphia and James Tyler of Murfreesboro; three sisters, Mildred Fleetwood and Annette Beale, both of Murfreesboro and Rosa T. Pope of Como; and seven grandchildren.

Rufus T. Hart Sr.

SUFFOLK, Va. n Rufus T. Hart Sr., a native of Como, died November 26, 2007. He was the widower of Mable Gardner Hart.

Mr. Hart was the CEO of Metropolitan Church Federal Credit Union. He was a member of Odd Fellows Lodge No. 1495, Trojan Club, Letter Carriers of America, past president of Tidewater Affair Association Inc., VA Credit Union League Association and a lifetime NAACP member. Rufus was a devoted member of Metropolitan Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sons, Ronald O. Hart and Jerry B. Hart Sr.; sister, Adell Hart; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

A viewing will be held from noon to 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the Melvin R. Boone Chapel of T.E. Cooke-Overton Funeral Home. The family will receive visitors at 805 Adams St. at all other times. A funeral will be held at noon Saturday in Metropolitan Baptist Church. Interment at Carver Memorial Cemetery.

Sadie M. Daniels

RICH SQUARE n Sadie M. Daniels, 60, a native of Northampton County, died November 26, 2007 at Rich Square Health Care Center.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Wilder’s Funeral Home Chapel, Aulander, by the Rev. Jerome Shoulders. Burial will be in Branches Chapel Missionary Church Cemetery, Rich Square.

She was a sales clerk.

She is survived by a sister, Annie Lee Holt of Rich Square.

Linwood E. Cary

RICH SQUARE n Linwood Earl Cary, 83, a native of Northampton County, died November 22, 2007 at Halifax Regional Medical Center.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Chapel Hill Baptist Church by Elder Arthur Clark. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Cary was a member of Chapel Hill Baptist Church and a truck driver for DL White Trucking.

Survivors include his wife, Belinda Wilkins Cary of Rich Square; a daughter, Latonya Cary of Rich Square; a son, Tracy Wilkins of Rich Square; and brother, George Cary Jr. and Jesse Cary, both of Rich Square.

Tinsley McWilliams

HALIFAX n Tinsley McWilliams, 87, died November 26, 2007 at Halifax Regional Medical Center.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday with visitation prior to the service from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Roanoke Rapids Chapel of H.D. Pope Funeral Home. Interment will be in Oakridge Cemetery, Weldon.

Joseph Gay

ENFIELD n Joseph Gay, 65, died November 22, 2007 at Halifax Regional Medical Center, Roanoke Rapids.

A funeral will be conducted at 6:30 p.m. Friday with a visitation prior to services from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the Roanoke Rapids Chapel of H.D. Pope Funeral Home.

Oscar Spaulding Sr.

PENDLETON n Oscar Barton “O.B.” Spaulding, 90, a native of Sunbury, died November 24, 2007 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at St. John AME Church, Conway, by the Rev. Gaston T. Tann. Burial will be in Rocky Mount Memorial Gardens. Mr. Spaulding requests that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Building Fund, St. John AME Church, P.O. Box 322, Conway, NC 27820.

Survivors include his children, Oscar Spaulding Jr. and Yvonne M. Spaulding-Smith, both of Charlotte; one brother, Rev. Andrew Spaulding; and three grandchildren.

Luzie Garris

CONWAY n Luzie Garris, 91, a native of Northampton County, died November 26, 2007 at Halifax Regional Medical Center.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Conway by the Rev. Mark A. Barfield. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.

Survivors include her son, Lee Garris of Winton; four daughters, Sherline G. Cherry and Mary C. Garris, both of Conway, Fannie Clark of Newport News, Va., and Joshie Brown of Columbia, S.C.; one brother, Robert Garris of Baltimore, Md.; two sisters, Josephine McCloud of Chesapeake and Mary Fannie Boone of Pendleton; 21 grandchildren; and 53 great-grandchildren.

Daisy H. Brown

AHOSKIE n Daisy Hoggard Brown, 91, of the 1200 block of NC Highway 461, died Tuesday, November 27, 2007, in Roanoke Chowan Hospital.

Mr. Brown was born in Bertie County, a daughter of the late Jim and Nancy White Hoggard.  She was a member of Union Baptist Church and a homemaker.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Doris B. Smith and husband, Al of Murfreesboro, Mary B. Brock and husband, Johnny of Ahoskie; sons, Shirley Brown and wife, Alicia Faye of Ahoskie, and James E. Brown and wife, Camelia of Kernersville, NC; five grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and one great great grandchild.  Besides her parents, Mrs. Brown was predeceased by her husband, James Raleigh Brown.

A celebration of life service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 30, 2007, at Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, with the Rev. Thomas G. Hayes officiating.  Burial will follow in Aulander Cemetery.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. on Thursday and other times at Mrs. Brown’s home.

Christopher Floyd

SAND SPRINGS, Okla. n Christopher James Floyd, 13, a native of Tulsa, died November 24, 2007.

Floyd was a student at Moriah Christian Academy. He was a member of Jubilee International Christian Center and also a member of the Boy Scouts Star Rank Troop #507.

A service was conducted Wednesday at Jubilee International Christian Center in Sand Springs by the Rev. Ronn Glosson, the Rev. Bill Eubanks and the Rev. Dan Fisher. Interment was in Meadowbrook Cemetery, Tulsa. Mark Griffith Memorial Funeral Home was in charge. Donations may be made to the mission or charity of your choice in Christopher’s name.

Survivors include his parents, Leslie Floyd and James Floyd; a sister, Andrea Floyd; a brother, Justin Floyd, all of the home; grandparents, Richard and Carole DeBoo of Conrad, Montana, and C.M. Floyd Jr. and Carolyn Floyd of Murfreesboro; and a great-grandmother, Mary Ellen Brownell of Conrad.

Edward Holley

MURFREESBORO n Edward Holley, 82, a native of Bertie County, died November 26, 2007 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Parkers Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Fernando Temple Sr. Burial will be in the Eley family cemetery. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.

Survivors include his wife, Sarah Holley of Mapleton; seven sons, Gary Holley, Melvin Holley, George Holley and Tony Holley, all of Mapleton, Mark Holley of Jacksonville, Fla., Sam Holley of Virginia Beach, Va., Karl Holley of Winton; two sisters, Ava Holley-Closs of Raleigh and Vivian Holley of Wake Forest; one brother, Paul Anderson of Zuni; two sisters, Marie Joyner of Conway and Aldonia Newsome of Murfreesboro; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Harold Stephenson

DARBY, PENN. n Harold “Iceberg” Stephenson, 50, a native of Northampton County, died November 23, 2007 at University of Pennsylvania Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Conway by the Rev. Bobby Warren. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A viewing will be held from 12 noon to 2 p.m. at the church. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.

Survivors include six children, Keecha Stephenson, Lakine Stephenson, Tanisha Stephenson, Tiana Stephenson, Derrick Stephenson, and De’andre Stephenson, all of Pennsylvania; two brothers, Alfred Stephenson Jr. of Brookhaven and Ricky Stephenson of Media, Pa.; four sisters, Clemetine Martin, Shirley Gibson and Rachel Stephenson, all of Philadelphia and Denise Butts of Upper Darby, Pa.; and two grandchildren.
