Hazel Perry

COLERAIN – Hazel Perry, 56, a native of Bertie County, died November 14, 2007 at her residence.

She was a member of Greater Wynn’s Grove Missionary Baptist Church and was a retired farmer.

Survivors include one son, James Perry; eight sisters, Geneva Perry of Powellsville, Odessa Perry Campbell of Ahoskie, Ella Francis Perry of New Britian, Ct., Sarah Perry of Colerain, Annie Gray Perry of Windsor, Susie Perry of Williamsburg, Va., Elaine Askew of NJ and Shirley Mae Dempsey of Colerain; and one granddaughter.

A funeral was conducted on Sunday at Greater Wynn’s Grove Missionary Baptist Church by Bishop Thomas Lee. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Hunter’s Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, was in charge.

Virginia D. Grant

WOODLAND -Virginia Dare Grant, 83, a native of Northampton County, died November 13, 2007 at Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville.

She was a member of Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church where she was Church Secretary.

Virginia was a retired teacher for Northampton County Schools.

She was with the International Reading Association and the National Educators Association.

Survivors include one sister, Marie Tyner of Woodland; and a host of nieces and nephews.

A funeral was conducted Saturday at Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church by Rev. Eddie Vinson.

Burial was in the church cemetery.

Frank Norman

ROANOKE RAPIDS n Frank Norman, 65, died November 12, 2007 at Halifax Regional Medical Center.

A funeral was conducted Monday at the Roanoke Rapids Chapel of H.D. Pope Funeral Home by the Rev. Chris Mallory. Interment was in Piney Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

Albert M Bond

WINDSOR n Albert M. Bond, 71, died November 17, 2007 at his residence.

A funeral will be conducted on Thursday at 12 noon at St. Francis Missionary Baptist Church A visitation will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Gilliam Funeral Home. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Windsor.

Howard G Futrell

CONWAY n Howard Glenn Futrell, 81, died Friday, November 16, 2007 at Roanoke Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie. Born and raised in Northampton County, he was retired as a farmer and a poultry producer with Perdue, and had also, been employed at Planters in Suffolk, VA, and Talon Zipper Company in Woodland. He was a member of Ashley’s Grove Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Cola G. Futrell and Rosetta Askew Futrell; brothers, Jesse Futrell, Roger Futrell, Russell Futrell, Vernie Futrell, and sisters, Bessie Barnes and Mattie Rockerfella.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 61 years, Mildred Lassiter Futrell of their home; three sons, David Futrell and wife, Delma of Murfreesboro, Donald Futrell and wife, Wanda, of Suffolk, VA, and Keith Futrell and wife Robynn of Goode, VA; three grandchildren, Luke Futrell and wife Shay of Conway, Dana Thompson and husband, Gene, of Abingdon, VA, and Lance Futrell of Murfreesboro; two great-grandchildren, Keelie and Chase Futrell of Conway; and one sister, Emma Buck of Norfolk, Va.

Futrell services were held Sunday, 2:30 p.m. at Ashley’s Grove Baptist Church with Rev. David Ross and Rev. Tommy Tripp presiding. Burial followed in Ashley’s Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family received friends at Bridgers Funeral Home, Inc. in Conway on Saturday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and at other tines at the family home.

Anyone wishing to share a memorial donation may do so to Ashley’s Grove Baptist Church.

Mary Harrell

ROCKY MOUNT n Mary Harrell, 87, died November 14, 2007 at Nash General Hospital.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Gardens of Gethsemane. H.D. Pope Funeral Home, Rocky Mount, is in charge.

Weston Thompson

WINDSOR n Weston “Raleigh Boy” Thompson, died November 16, 2007.

Edward Clemons

COLERAIN n Edward Eugene Clemons, died on November 16, 2007.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Peterson Chapel Baptist Church, Merry Hill. A visitation will be held from 7-8 p.m. Tuesday at Gilliam Funeral Home. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Rosie L. Wynn

WINDSOR n Rosie L. Wynn, died November 15, 2007 at Martin General Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Cedar Landing Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Gilliam Funeral Home, Windsor, is in charge.

Esther P. King

HOBBSVILLE -Esther Perry King, 88, a native of Perquimans County, died November 17, 2007, in her home. She was the widow of Thomas W. King.

Mrs. King was a

homemaker and had formerly worked as a receptionist/physician’s assistant with the late Dr. Carlton Davenport in Hertford and also as a clerk with the Perquimans County Draft Board. She was a member of Sandy Cross Baptist Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Ethel May Byrum of Hobbsville; a sister, Katherine Trueblood of Hobbsville; a brother, Lawrence Perry of Hertford; and two grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Sandy Cross Baptist Church by the Revs. E. Vernon Gilmer Jr. and Ernest Trueblood. Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery, Hertford. Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main St., Gatesville, is in charge.

of Rita (Thompson) Mcgee

December 28, 1935- November 15, 2007

 Rita Thompson McGee, a longtime resident of Suffolk and Gates County passed away Thursday evening (11-15-07) following a long struggle with lung cancer.

She is survived by her husband, Clarence &uot;Buck&uot; McGee; five children, Frances, Christine, Robert, Marie and Laura; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a brother, Howard Thompson of La Cross, WI.; and a sister, Joanne Gawenda of Renseleir, IN.

Mrs. McGee most recently resided in South Hill, VA., but was a Gates County resident for many years. She was an active member of Kittrell’s United Methodist Church as well as the local V.F.W. and American Legion.  All who knew Rita always spoke of her perpetual positive attitude and joy filled heart.  Rita’s love and adoration of God and her children were undeniable.  Her annual Slovakia Kolaihke cookies will surely be missed, as will a plaque proclaiming &uot;A Plump Wife And A Large Barn Never Did Any Harm&uot;.

Rita’s last hours were spent at Hospice at the Meadowlands, a six patient facility committed to the quality of life for the terminally ill.  She spent her last hours there with her husband and children.  There will be no formal service as directed by Rita prior to her passing.

We all love you Mom. Rest now in peace.

William R. “Billy” Newsome, Jr.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -William R. “Billy” Newsome, Jr., 57, a loving husband and father, died Thursday, November 15, 2007.

A native of Aulander, NC, Billy was born to William R., Sr. and Ethel Hardy Newsome on October 15, 1950. He was a 1968 graduate of Ahoskie High School in Ahoskie, NC and a 1970 graduate of Wilson Technical College in Wilson, NC.

Upon completion of his education, he nobly served in the Vietnam War as a member of the US Army.

Billy was a dedicated member of First Baptist Church East End and was employed with Northrop Grumman for over 30 years.

Cherished memories will be shared among his wife, Annie Howard Newsome; daughter, Shawnise Newsome of Richmond; siblings, Cendyrethia “Rita” Brown, Barbara Kerns, and Joseph Bernard “JB” Newsome, all of Aulander, NC; father-in-law, Alton Howard of Murfreesboro, NC;

and a host of

treasured family members and friends.

Viewing will begin at 12 noon and the family will receive friends at Cooke Bros. Funeral Chapel on Monday, November 19, 2007 from 5 n 7pm. A funeral service will be held at 11am on Tuesday, November 20, 2007 at First Baptist Church East End, Newport News, VA.
