WINDSOR – After last Thursday’s (November 8) Windsor board of commissioners meeting, it’s official.

The new road leading to the new county social services building will be named Jasper Bazemore Avenue.

Since the road is in town limits, the Town of Windsor had the right to name it, but they gave Bertie County officials permission to choose the name.

The county originally came up with either Jasper Lane or Jasper Bazemore Lane, in honor of the late J. Jasper Bazemore, who served as a county commissioner for over a decade before he died shortly after his re-election in 2006.

Bazemore was instrumental in facilitating the building of the new social services complex, which is another reason his fellow commissioners felt it would be befitting to name the road in his memory.

After some debate on whether to use &uot;Jasper&uot; or the full name &uot;Jasper Bazemore&uot; as the first part of the road name, both boards agreed on the latter after Bazemore’s family indicated that was what they believed he would have wanted.

At the Nov. 5 meeting of the Bertie County Commissioners, Commissioner Wallace Perry informed the other board members of the town’s desire to change &uot;Lane&uot; to &uot;Avenue.&uot;

Perry explained, &uot;The mayor (of Windsor) called and asked if it could be Jasper Bazemore Avenue instead of (Jasper Bazemore) Lane because it (the road) more meets the requirements of an avenue instead of a lane.&uot;

A motion was made and the measure passed without objection.

During the town board’s meeting November 8, the commissioners unanimously voted to name the road Jasper Bazemore Avenue.
