Ethel R. Bond

AULANDER n Ethel Ree “Sis White” Bond, 76, a native of Windsor, died October 18, 2007 at her residence.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Speller’s Chapel Disciples of Christ Church, Windsor, by Bishop John Armstrong. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Windsor, Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

She was a member of Speller’s Chapel Disciples of Christ Church, Windsor.

Survivors include her daughters, Blanche Bond Stephenson of the home, Rosa Drew of Brooklyn, NY, Mary Smallwood, Patricia Anne Bond, Sylvia Bond, and Rosa Bond, all of Windsor and Sandra Lee of Bronx; one son, Edward Bond of Windsor; 16 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

Kenneth R. Battle

ROCKY MOUNT n Kenneth R. Battle, 37, died October 20, 2007 at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete. H.D. Pope Funeral Home, Rocky Mount, is in charge.

Ida A. Still

FRANKLIN, Va. – Ida Askew Still, 75, a native of Henderson, died October 20, 2007, in her residence.

Mrs. Still was a former member of Parkview Baptist Church in Newport News and was an active member of Buckhorn Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Harry Arthur &uot;Pop&uot; Still; four daughters, Carol Harris of Newport News, Jean Greene of Hayes, Donna Machado of Hampton and Debbie Jeter of Franklin; one son, Ricky Still of Yorktown; three stepdaughters, Gloria Muther of California, Brenda Olson of Manassas, and Betty Jo Cates of Westwego, La.; stepson, Kenneth Still of Hampton; 24 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Buckhorn Baptist Church, Como, by the Rev. Jay Brabben and the Rev. John Hackney. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Wright Funeral Home is in charge.

Cain Wolford Jr.

CORAPEAKE – Cain Wolford Jr., 77, a native of Majestic, Ky., died October 19, 2007. A United States Army and Navy veteran, he was employed as a patrol officer with the Virginia Dept. of Transportation.

Survivors include his wife, Beatrice Smith Wolford; one daughter, Inga W. Ruth of Suffolk; four sons, Henry Wolford of Gates, Thomas Norman Wolford of Suffolk, Samuel D. Wolford and James E. Wolford of Corapeake; three sisters, Pearl Daughtrey, Ruby Muncie and Boots Phillips, all of Florida; one brother, Jake Wolford of Corapeake; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Mausoleum at Nansemond-Suffolk Cemetery with visitation with the family there one hour prior. Harrell and Hill Funeral Home, Suffolk, is in charge.

Frank Allen

CORAPEAKE – Francis Lee &uot;Frank&uot; Allen, 58, a native of Norfolk, Va., died October 19, 2007, in his home.

Allen was born was a retired crane operator with more than 35 years of employment, he had worked with Operating Engineers Local 147 and had served in the Merchant Marines.

Survivors include his wife, Sandra J. Harris Allen; two daughters, Sherry A. Jones of Jacksonville, Fla., and Jennifer L. Williams of Corapeake; a sister, Margaret Ann Lineberry of Chesapeake; two brothers, D. Roy Allen Jr. of Chesapeake and Thomas Gene Allen of Zuni, Va.; and two grandchildren.

A funeral was conducted Sunday in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home by James Baker. Following services, at his request, he will be cremated.

James Rountree

EURE – James C. “J.C.” Rountree, 25, a native of Frankfurt, Germany, died October 21, 2007 at Duke University Medical Center, Durham.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Swindell Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Jerry R. Fleeman and Diane Hoffnagle. Burial will be in the Rountree/Stallings family cemetery, Belvidere. The family will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, Hertford,

and other times at the home in Eure.

Survivors include his parents, Clifton “Bud” and Donna R. Pierce of Eure; four sisters, Lisa P. Gay of Virginia Beach, Va., Patricia P. Daniel of Roanoke, CA, Frances P. Polk of Franklin and Sarah Ann Pierce of Eure; one brother, Clifton Steven Pierce III of Jacksonville; and his maternal grandfather, Wilson Rountree of Hertford.

Marjorie Hinton

NORFOLK, Va. n Marjorie Hinton, 83, a native of Gates County, died October 18, 2007 at Chesapeake General Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Wednesday at New Middle Swamp Baptist Church, Corapeake, by the Rev. Wesley Boone. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A viewing will be conducted Tuesday at Hertford County Undertakers Chapel, Sunbury.

Survivors include one daughter, Iris Taylor of Camden; two sisters, Agnes Daniels of Norfolk and Mattie Hinton of Hempstead, NY; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Jamie Whitehead

LEWISTON-WOODVILLE n Jamie Lane Whitehead, a native of Hertford County, died October 18, 2007.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Grace Episcopal Church, Woodville, by the Rev. Louise Anderson and the Rev. Foy Bradshaw. Memorial gifts may be made to Lewiston-Woodville Fire and Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 340, Lewiston-Woodville, NC 27849. Walker Funeral Home, Windsor, is in charge.

She attended MIT and was a self-employed programmer.

Survivors include her father, Joseph Green Whitehead Jr. and Lynn Harris Whitehead; a brother, Austin Lyon Whitehead, all of Lewiston-Woodville; and her maternal grandmother, Margaret Lane Thompson of Durham.

Sarah Owens

GATES n Sarah Margaret Langston Owens, 95, a native of Gates, died October 17, 2007 at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital. She was the widow of Russell G. Owens.

A funeral was conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. in Kittrell’s United Methodist Church by the Rev. Mike Askew. Burial was in Holy Neck Christian Church Cemetery, Suffolk, Va. Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, was in charge. Memorials may be made to the memorial fund of Kittrell’s United Methodist Church in care of Ada Carroll, 1046 NC Hwy. 37 North, Gates, NC 27937.

Mrs. Owens was a charter member of Kittrell’s United Methodist Church and served in many areas of the church’s ministry during its 77 year history.

Survivors include two sons, George Owens of Virginia Beach and Dr. R. Glenn Owens Jr. of Suffolk; two grandchildren; and step-grandson.

Esther Barber

AULANDER n Esther Janis Bazemore Barber, 86, a native of Bertie County, died October 20, 2007, in Brian Center Health & Rehabilitation, Windsor.

Mrs. Barber was a member of Republican Baptist Church. She was a homemaker.

She is survived by a sister, Elizabeth Burden Lewis of Aulander.

A celebration of life service was conducted Monday at Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, by the Rev. Robert May.  Burial followed in Aulander Cemetery.
