HENDERSON – Lawrence Academy reached the Final Four.

The Lady Warriors volleyball team defeated Hobgood Academy in the Elite Eight to advance to the finals.

The Lady Raiders had defeated Lawrence in the Tarheel Independent Conference tournament championship in a five-set thriller and the Lady Warriors wanted a chance to redeem themselves.

They did exactly that with a straight-set victory. They won 25-23, 25-21 and 25-17.

“Our girls wanted to avenge their loss to Hobgood in the TIC finals,” Warriors coach Dr. Ed Clouse said. “Hobgood came out strong in game one and game two, but we were able to hang on.

“Kendall Street had one of the best games of her career both offensively and defensively,” he added.

Street, a senior at Lawrence, recorded a double-double, with 14 kills and 11 digs while classmate Kathryn Taylor had eight digs, five kills and two blocks. The third senior on the club, Kate Hodges, recorded nine blocks and eight digs.

The Lady Warriors got another stellar performance from junior Debbie Stotesbury who had 10 digs to go along with her 20 assists.

Sophomore Ashtyn Mizelle checked in with nine kills and three digs while Shelby Zube had 10 assists, four digs and three aces.

Once in the Final Four, the Lady Warriors lost to number two seeded Cresset Christian with a final of 25-17, 25-18 and 25-17.

“Our girls never gave up and played well,” Dr. Clouse said. “Kendall and Kathryn refused to let balls hit the floor and Shelby had a great game serving.”

Street recorded 15 digs to go along with seven kills and Taylor had 11 digs as well as three blocks.

Zube recorded an 18-for-18 serving day with two aces. Hodges had four blocks, Mizelle had seven digs and two kills and Stotesbury had 10 assists and five digs.

The Warriors ended their season 19-4 overall.
