AHOSKIE – Be on the lookout for “funny money.”

Ahoskie Police Chief Troy Fitzhugh is urging business owners in town to closely study any 20-dollar bills that are passed as part of a retail transaction.

“We have had several reports of counterfeit bills showing up at businesses on Academy Street and Memorial Drive,” Fitzhugh said. “We are asking those business owners as well as everyone working retail trade in Ahoskie to be on the lookout for these worthless 20-dollar bills.”

He continued, “We appreciate having these businesses in our town as they provide a great service to our community. I would hate to see them suffer because someone out there is passing worthless money.”

Fitzhugh urged owners and clerks at Ahoskie-based businesses to use the special marking pens that are able to detect a counterfeit bill before a transaction is completed.

“If you notice a counterfeit bill, please call the Ahoskie Police Department immediately,” Fitzhugh said.
