Frederick M. Nichols

AHOSKIE n Frederick Marion “Fred” Nichols, 68, of the 200 block of South Church Road, died Saturday, September 22, 2007, in his home.

Mr. Nichols was born in Bertie County, a son of the late, Ross and Velna Cooke Nichols.

He was a member of Earlys Baptist Church and was a retired farmer and former owner and operator of Nichol’s Supermarket.

Fred is survived by his wife, Janie Morris Nichols; three sisters, Frances Futrell and Barbara Mulder, both of Conway, NC, and Delores Early of Hexlena, NC; and three brothers, Curtis Nichols of Suffolk, VA, Joe Nichols and Jessie Nichols, both of Ahoskie.

He was predeceased by his son Randy Scott Nichols.

A celebration of life service was conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, September 24, 2007, at Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, with the Rev. Ronald McSwain officiating.

Burial followed in Highland Memorial Gardens.

The family received friends at the home.

Frances Irene H. Callis

RALEIGH n Frances Irene Hays Callis, formerly of Harrellsville, died Friday, September 21, 2007, at Independence Village, Raleigh, NC.

Mrs. Callis was born in Wheeling, West Virginia, a daughter of the late Lloyd and Florence Hays.

She attended Harrellsville Baptist Church and was a graduate of the University of Virginia Nursing School.

During her career, Mrs. Callis worked at Maguire Veterans Hospital in Richmond, VA, until she met and married the late Maynard William Callis in 1955 and moved to Harrellsville. She continued to work in nursing at Roanoke Chowan Hospital in the Obstetrics Unit until her retirement in 1985.

Left to cherish her memory is her daughter, Charlene Callis Wiggins and husband, Kent of Cary, NC; her grandchildren, Matthew Ryan Wiggins and Shannon Elizabeth Wiggins; three sisters, Helen Oldfield of Cincinnati, OH, Phyllis Thornton of Hamilton, OH, and Kathryn Clark of San Antonio, TX;

She is also survived by her brothers-in-law, Sam Callis of Suffolk, VA, Alvin Callis of Portsmouth, VA, Elton Callis and Cecil Callis, both of Harrellsville, NC and sisters-in-law, Jennie Hays of Chanhassen, MN, and Patricia Hays of Raphine, VA.

A celebration of life service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 25, 2007, at Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, with the Rev. Tony Capehart officiating.

Burial will be in Harrellsville Cemetery.

The family received friends at Garrett Funeral Home, 205 NC Highway 42 West, Ahoskie, from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. on Monday.

The family wishes to express their thanks to the residents and staff of Independence Village for their compassion and care for Mrs. Callis during her stay there, and also wishes to express their appreciation to her many friends in Hertford County who continued to include her in their lives after her relocation to Raleigh in 1999.

Maggie E. Spruill

AHOSKIE n Maggie Ella “Doll” Spruill, 97, a native of Bertie County, died September 20, 2007 at Guardian Care Nursing Home, Ahoskie.

She was member of Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church, Colerain.

Survivors include a daughter, Maggie Lassiter of Ahoskie and Bessie Holley of Boston, MA; a son, Joseph “Billy” Spruill of Boston; a brother, Ned Wilson of Philadelphia, PA; 11 grandchildren; and 33 great-grandchildren.

A funeral was conducted Sunday at Wilder’s Funeral Home Chapel, Aulander. Burial was in the Wilder-Cherry Family Cemetery.

James Scott Sr.

MERRY HILL n James Jasper Scott Sr., 56. a native of Bertie County, died September 22, 2007 at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

Scott was a US Army veteran and a member of St. Paul Church of God in Christ in Tyner. He was a jailer at Bertie Martin Regional Jail, Windsor.

Survivors include his wife, Thelma Diane Williams Scott of Merry Hill; sons, Terry Scott and

James Jasper Scott Jr., both of Ahoskie and Tauren Durrell Scott of Plymouth; brothers, Herbert Scott and Roy Scott, both of Washington, D.C., Ray Watford of Ahoskie and Otis Watford Jr. of Kinston; sisters, Margaret Boney of Washington, Janet Manley of Aulander, Queen Seaborn of Washington and Mattie Boyd of Roanoke Rapids; and six grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Ashland Missionary Baptist Church, Merry Hill, by Bishop Leroy Woolard. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A wake will be held from 6-7 p.m. Tuesday at St. Paul Church of God in Christ, Tyner. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Gurney J. Wilkins

SUFFOLK, Va. – Gurney Jernigan Wilkins, 90, a native of Gates County, died September 23, 2007. She was the widow of Lafayette T. Wilkins Sr.

Mrs. Wilkins was a member of Bethlehem Christian Church, The Woman’s Fellowship, Ladies Star Sunday school class and The Fellowship Club.

Survivors include three sons, the Rev. Lafayette T. &uot;Mugsy&uot; Wilkins Jr. of Suffolk, Floyd E. Wilkins Sr. of Suffolk and Robert Melvin Wilkins of Gates County; sister, Etta J. Jones of Gates County; brother, Mallie R. Jernigan of Suffolk; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home & Crematory by the Rev. Wayne Gardner and the Rev. Jonathan Palmer. Burial will be in Black Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Franklin. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 7 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Bethlehem Christian Church, 1549 Holland Road, Suffolk, VA 23434.

BELVIDERE – Doris Ruth N. Eason, died Sept. 21, 2007.

A funeral was conducted Monday in Joppa Missionary Baptist Church, Hobbsville. Stallings Funeral Chapel, Gatesville,was in charge.

Gayla R. Goodwin

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – Gayla Raine Harris Goodwin, 53, a native of Portsmouth, died September 26, 2007 in a local hospital.

Mrs. Goodwin was a secretary for Tharrington and Hoggue Sheet Metal.

Survivors include two sons, Jason D. Goodwin and Dustin R. Goodwin, both of Phoenix, Ariz.; two sisters, Dawn A. King of Houston, Texas and Piper D. Tolson of Portsmouth; a brother, Michael W. Everly of Portsmouth; and five grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday in Eureka Baptist Church Cemetery, Corapeake, by Keith Lewis. The family received friends in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, Monday.

Ronald E. Bordeaux

ROPER n Ronald Ellis Bordeaux, 66, of the 100 block of Summerby Road, died Saturday, September 22, 2007, at his home.

Mr. Bordeaux was born October 21, 1940, in Elizabethtown, NC, a son of the late Alston and Earle Suggs Bordeaux.

He was a self employed electrician.

Left to cherish Ron’s memory is his beloved wife of 46 years, VirgiaWhite Bordeaux; his daughters and their spouses, Deanna and Vernon Marsh of Monrovia, MD, Shelia and Frankie Parker of Aulander, NC, and Ronda and Brent Stull of Emmitsburg, MD; three grandsons, Vernon, Tony and Timothy; a step grandson and his wife, Dale and Lori; and one step great grandson, Joshua.

He is also survived by five brothers, Robert of Gainesville, FL, Richard of Elizabethtown, NC, Gordon of Wilmington, NC, Travis of White Lake, NC and Alton of Sumter, SC; and one sister, Mary Sue Newsome of Roanoke, VA.

A celebration of life service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 26, 2007, at Ebenezer Assembly of God Church with the Rev. Steve Evans officiating.

Burial will follow in Highland Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends at Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday.

Jessie Watford of Norfolk, Va.; one brother, Curtis Flood of Ahoskie; two sisters, Wray Hunter of Rich Square and Virginia Dare Jernigan of Washington, D.C.; 33 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.
