Helen Yeargan

GARNER – Helen Frances Parker Yeargan, 91, a native of Northampton County, died September 16, 2007.

Mrs. Yeargan was a graduate of Meredith College and was a science teacher in the Wake County Public School System.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at New Bethel Baptist Church, Garner. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Survivors include a son, Sherman A. Yeargan, Jr. of Garner; a grandson; a

She was preceded in death by her husband, Sherman A. Yeargan; her daughter, Helen Frances Yeargan; her sisters, Mary Lois P. Meacham and Janie P. Lewis and her brother, Charles C. Parker.

Howard B. Bass

COLERAIN n Howard Bernard Bass, 52, a native of Bertie County, died September 15, 2007 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital.

Bass was a self-employed mechanic. He was a member of Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors include his mother, Annie Bass of Colerain; a son, Antione Robinson of Greensboro; brothers, Rudolph Bass Jr. and Edward Bass, both of Colerain; and his sisters, Kathleen Riddick of Baltimore, Md., Lisa Bass of Middletown, CT and Alfreida Watford of Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Saturday at Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church, Colerain, by the Rev. Nathaniel Thompson. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Dornetta Whitehead

AHOSKIE n Dornetta Holley Whitehead, 62, a native of Hertford County, died September 14, 2007 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Friday at New Haven Baptist Church, Murfreesboro, by the Rev. Lloyd Gatling. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.

Survivors include three sons, Willie Whitehead, Joey Whitehead and Columbus Holley, all of Ahoskie and Billy Whitehead of Winton;

two brothers, Henry Holley and McCoy Holley, both of Ahoskie; two sisters, Carolyn Mills and Edna Cherry, both of Ahoskie; and three grandchildren.

Thelma B. Razor

NEW YORK n Thelma Brown “Sweetlady” Razor, 77, died September 17, 2007 at Pitt County Memorial Hospital.

Agnes Gaye

GARYSBURG n Agnes Gaye, 52, died September 16, 2007 at her residence.

A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Roanoke Rapids Chapel of H.D. Pope Funeral Home. A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday with a visitation from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Victory Baptist Church, Roanoke Rapids, by Pastor Michael Jones. Also on Saturday a visitation will be held from 12 noon to 1 p.m. with the funeral service beginning at Landmark Baptist Church, Elkton, MD., by the Rev. Christopher Engleberth. Interment will be in North East United Methodist Church, Maryland.

Virginia H. Neale

NORFOLK, Va. – Virginia Hoeding Neale, 87, a native of Northampton County, died September 17, 2007 in a local hospital. She was the widow of William H. Brown and Thomas F. Neale Jr.

Mrs. Neale during World War II she served for two years in the Women’s Army Corps in the Intelligence Department. She was a 60-year member of First Presbyterian Church of Norfolk where she was an elder, president of the Women of the Church, a Circle Leader, member of the Meals on Wheels Committee and was chairperson of the Church Wedding Guild.

Survivors include three daughters, Carol Brown Guinn, Deborah Neale Boling and Susan Neale Stevens; three sons, Eugene L. Brown, Stewart B. Neale and Harvey W. Neale; 17 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at a visitation from 7 until 8 p.m. Thursday at Cox Funeral Home, 631 Westover Ave., Norfolk. A funeral will be private. Joseph Brown

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Joseph Brown, 65, a native of Southampton County, died September 13, 2007.

Brown was a noted farmer in Southampton County.

Survivors include his wife, Clintonteen Brown; two daughters, Helen Thomas and Doris Washington; one son, James Earl Brown; goddaughter, Sharon Bramlett; a granddaughter; and three sisters, Delous Washington, Linda Newby and Luellen Bradshaw Boone.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. n James R. Outlaw, died September 19, 2007 at Riverside Hospital, Newport News.

Riddick was a member of Zion Hill Baptist Church.

Survivors include one son, Clinton Riddick of Colerain; three sisters, Anna Slade, Daisey Leary and Novella Riddick, all of Colerain; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild.
