AHOSKIE – Ridgecroft School continues to be the surprise of the soccer season.
In outings Friday and Tuesday, the Rams rolled off a pair of shutout victories to improve to a near-perfect 13-0-1 for the season.
The Rams defeated Wayne Country Day School 3-0 Tuesday afternoon in a Coastal Plains Independent Conference matchup that moved their league record to 5-0-1.
“I don’t think the guys were pleased with the way we played today,” third-year coach Aron Martin said. “It’s a victory and we’ll take it, but we have to make sure we don’t get complacent. We have to stay hungry.”
Ridgecroft scored all three goals in the first half, getting the first on a free kick from Hanes Joyner.
Leading scorer Josh Morris then connected for the second goal of the day and Miles Harrell had the final tally.
The CPIC win came just a few days after Ridgecroft handily defeated Terra Ceia Christian School (9-0) for their Homecoming Day game on Friday.
“It’s nice to reclaim Homecoming,” Martins said afterwards. “It’s good to get a little tuneup heading into a tough week next week.
“I’m thankful we were able to win on Homecoming,” he continued. “We knocked the ball around pretty well.”
It was again Joyner who got the scoring started for Ridgecroft when he put the ball in the back of the next five minutes into that contest. Morris had an assist on the goal.
At the 10 minute mark, Patrick Dilday scored to push the Ridgecroft lead to 2-0.
Before the half was over, Joyner scored again before Asher Turner and Logan Kinlaw each scored for the Rams, giving Ridgecroft a 5-0 halftime lead.
Early in the second half, Zach Futrell scored on a Joyner assist and then Morris found the back of the net on a header in the 47th minute of play.
Morris had one more tally and senior defender Matthew Jones scored the final goal for the Rams.
The Rams are 13-0-1 overall headed into Friday’s matchup with Greenfield School. The two teams are tied atop the CPIC standings and tied in their previous meeting. Game time is 4:45 p.m. at Ridgecroft.
