Alma D. Brittle
CONWAY n Alma Davis Brittle, 90, died Thursday, September 6, 2007, at Roanoke Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie after a short illness. She had been preceded in death by her loving husband of 55 years, Lee Brittle.
A native of Northampton County, NC, she was a homemaker, a charter member of the Conway Woman’s Club, a member of the Conway Book Club, and wrote a Personal Column for the News Herald for many years. Her most cherished memberships were church affiliations throughout her life. As an adult, she was an active member of Conway Baptist Church, attending the Lonnie Sasser and the Kelly White Sunday School classes, the Nellie DeLoatch Circle, helping in the Primary Department, and singing for over 35 years in the Sanctuary Choir.
Survivors include one daughter, Shelba B. Williams and husband, Bruce, of Hayes, VA; two grandsons, Brian Williams and wife, Kelly, of Hayes, VA, and Brent Williams and wife, Sharon, of Christiansburg, VA; six grandchildren, Savannah, Benjamin, Scott, Grant, Shuler, and Brittle; one sister, Hazel Joyner of Virginia Beach, VA; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Sunday, 2:30 p.m. in Conway Baptist Church with the Rev. Willie McLawhorn and the Rev. James Hester presiding. Burial followed in the Town of Conway Cemetery.
The family received friends at Bridgers Funeral Home, Inc., in Conway, Saturday, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and have requested that anyone wishing to share a memorial gift, please do so to Conway Baptist Church.
Virginia B. Martin
CONWAY n Virginia Barnes Martin, 83, died Thursday, September 6, 2007, at Lifecare Hospitals in Rocky Mount after a lengthy illness. She had been preceded in death by her loving husband of 64 years, Grady Lewis Martin, parents, John and Sarah Alice Grant Barnes, four brothers, Jacob Barnes, Julian Barnes, J.R. Barnes, and P.T. Barnes; and four sisters, Lottie M. Barnes, Gertrude Barnes, Retha Bridgers and Ethel Bristow.
A native of Northampton County, she attended Rich Square High School, was a member of Creeksville Baptist Church, and was a caring homemaker for her family.
Survivors include one son, Nicky Martin and one daughter, Sarah Frances Martin of their home; a special adopted daughter, Ellen Vick of Ahoskie; two brothers-in-law, Julian Bristow of Conway and Perry Martin of Ahoskie; numerous nieces and nephews; and a priceless cat, Cameron Duke.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, September 12, 2:00 p.m. at Bridgers Funeral Home, Inc. in Conway with Rev. Willie McLawhorn presiding. Burial will follow in the Town of Conway Cemetery.
The family will be receiving friends at Bridgers Funeral Home, Inc. Tuesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. A private family service will be held at a later time.
Sherry Powell
MERRY HILL n Sherry Pratt Powell, 43, a native of Chowan County, died September 8, 2007 at her home.
A funeral was conducted Monday at Riverside Baptist Church by the Rev. Al Jarrell and the Rev. William Leary. Burial was in the Holder family cemetery on Sheeps Landing Road. Memorial gifts may be made to the Colerain Rescue Squad, PO Box 397, Colerain, NC 27924. Walker Funeral Home was in charge.
Survivors include her husband, Ray Powell; a daughter, Alyssa Caroline Powell; sons, William Raymond Powell and Jonathan Christian Powell; her father, Michael Terry Pratt; her mother, Caroline McClenny Pratt; two brothers, Michael George Pratt and David Arron Pratt, all of Powellsville.
Darden C. Eure
EURE -Darden Clifton &uot;Dink&uot; Eure, 81, a native of Gates County, died September 6, 2007, in Down East Health & Rehab, Gatesville.
Eure was a retired book binder in the U.S. Government Printing Office, he had also worked at Teagle and Little in Norfolk. A member of Cool Spring Baptist Church, he was an Army veteran of World War II, had served in the Battle of the Bulge and was awarded the Purple Heart.
Survivors include two daughters, Debbie Kick of California and Jackie Warren of Utah; two sons, Robert Daniel &uot;Danny&uot; Eure of Eure and Darden C. Eure of Indonesia; three sisters, Jennie Parker of Gates, Lois Neal of Portsmouth and Phyllis Anderson of Newport News; 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were conducted Sunday in Cool Spring Baptist Church Cemetery by the Rev. Roger Kiker. Military honors were accorded. Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main St., Gatesville, was in charge.
Emily C. Perry
GATESVILLE n Emily Christian Perry, 93, a native of Gates County, died September 7, 2007 in Autumn Care Nursing Home, Suffolk, Va.
A funeral was conducted Sunday in Middle Swamp Baptist Church by Pastor Burt Pearce and the Rev. Russell Blanchard. Burial was in the church cemetery. Miller Funeral Home, was in charge.
Miss Perry was a retired seamstress. She was a member of Middle Swamp Baptist Church and a former member of the Gatesville Senior Citizens Club.
Survivors include a niece; great niece; and a great nephew.
Gracie M. Gatling
MURFREESBORO n Gracie M. Gatling, 93, a native of Murfreesboro, NC, died September 6, 2007 at Hospice Care Facility, Jonesboro, GA. She left her home in 1997 after the death of her husband, Walter Gatling, Jr., and moved to Fairburn, Ga., with her son and daughter-in-law. Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Gatling became her caretakers while she resided at Lake City Rehabilitation Nursing Home, Lake City, Ga.
Mrs. Gatling was a homemaker, member of Second Baptist Creeksville Church, Deaconess, Missionary, Coordinator/President of the Vaughan Town Senior Citizens Community Group. She was a member of Goodwill Chapter #567 Order of the Eastern Star, Woodland, NC, for over 45 years.
Survivors include four daughters, Lois Carter, Thelma Gatling, Brooklyn, NY, Emma Gatling, Newark, NJ and Catherine Taylor, Bronx, NY; four sons, James, Troy, Robert, Brooklyn, NY and Melvin Gatling, Fairburn, Ga.; four daughter-in-laws, one son-in-law, three sister-in-laws, 21 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, 1 p.m. at Second Baptist Creeksville Church, with Elder Georgia Fair presiding and Pastor Anthony Rawlings Sr. officiating. Burial will be at Revelle Hill Cemetery. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge of arrangements.
Willie G. Lassiter
AHOSKIE n Willie Gary Lassiter, died September 10, 2007 at Guardian Care Nursing Home, Ahoskie.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Reynolds Funeral Home Chapel Ahoskie, by the Rev. Charlie Carter Jr. Burial will be in the family cemetery, Cofield.
Survivors include a son, Willie Staton of Aulander; two brothers, Daniel Lassiter of Cofield and Norman Lassiter of Gatesville; and three sisters, Hattie Combo of Petersburg, Va., Emma Ward of Ahoskie and Wilma Askew of Winton.
