Mabel Lassiter
WOODLAND n Mabel Bryan Lassiter, 80, died Friday, August 17, 2007 at Roanoke Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie. She had been preceded in death by a son, Tommie Lassiter.
A native of Northampton County, she was a Homemaker and a longtime member of Potecasi Baptist Church, Precious to her family, she was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Tommie Wilson Lassiter of their home in Woodland; a son, Joseph Blake Lassiter and his wife, Carolyn of Woodland; three daughters, Sue L. Ayscue and her husband, William of Woodland, Emily L. Hadian and her husband, Javad of Oakton, Va., and Felicia L. Cooper and her husband, David of Woodland; nine grandchildren, Bryan Ayscue, Dawn Ayscue, Blake Lassiter, Johann Hadian, Cyrus Hadian, Shawn Hadian, Amy Cooper, Holly Cooper, and Michael Cooper; two step grandchildren, Brandee McFarland and John Theodorakis; one great-grandson, Wyatt Liverman; and one sister, Irma Futrell of Rich Square.
Funeral services were held Monday, 2 p.m. in Potecasi Baptist Church with Pastor Bob Deacon presiding. Burial followed in the Potecasi Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family received friends at Bridgers Funeral Home, Inc. in Conway on Sunday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and requested that anyone wishing to share a memorial gift, please do so to Potecasi Baptist Church, P.O. Box 8, Potecasi, NC 27867.
Julius Alston
ROCKY MOUNT n Julius Martin Alston, 63, died August 16, 2007 at Nash General Hospital.
A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Tuesday at New Hope Baptist Church, Nash County. Burial will be in the church cemetery. H.D. Pope Funeral Home, Rocky Mount, is in charge. Condolences may be sent to www.hdpopefuneralhome.com.
Joseph Cuyler
LEWISTON n Joseph Levine Cuyler, 50, died August 15, 2007 at Albemarle Hospital, Elizabeth City.
A funeral was conducted Monday at Saint Luke Pentecostal Healing Temple, Lewiston. Burial was in the church cemetery. Gilliam Funeral Home was in charge.
Elisabeth F. Harrison
PORTSMOUTH, Va. – Elisabeth Frye Harrison, 82, a native of East Milton, Mass., died August 18, 2007, in her residence. She was the widow of Coolidge Harrison.
Mrs. Harrison was a member of Biltmore Baptist Church and a retired Tidewater real estate broker.
Survivors include two daughters, Mary Austin of Portsmouth and Kathy M. Gonzalez of Chesapeake; one son, Ben Miller of Fayetteville; a sister, Ruth Harrison of Colerain; two brothers, David Frye of England and Jessie Frye of Florida; 16 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, by the Rev. T.M. Frye. Burial will follow in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and also at the daughter’s residence following the service at 715 Wood Duck Lane in Chesapeake.
Ruth W. Layden
BELVIDERE – Ruth Winslow Layden, 92, a native if Perquimans County, died August 16, 2007, in Brian Center Health & Rehab, Hertford. She was the widow of James Oliver Layden Sr.
Mrs. Layden was a homemaker, she was a member of Piney Woods Friends Meeting, had formerly served as a Sunday school teacher and had been active in the Adult Choir and the Women’s Missionary Society.
Survivors include three daughters, Ruth Ann Riddick of Smithfield, Va., Betty Lois Lane of Orlando, Fla., and Marvis Parrish of Belvidere; four sons, James O. &uot;Teny&uot; Layden Jr. of Belvidere, Wesley E. Layden Sr. of Hobbsville, Millard T. &uot;Shorty&uot; Layden Sr. of Tyner and Kenneth Ray Layden Sr. of Belvidere; a sister, Clara Hendren of Tyner; two brothers, Ernest Melvin Winslow of Elizabeth City and Clinton Ray Winslow of Hertford; 18 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren.
A funeral was conducted Sunday in Piney Woods Friends Meeting by Pastor Frank Carter and the Rev. Don English. Burial followed in Up River Cemetery. Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton, was in charge. Memorial contributions may be made to Piney Woods Friends Meeting, 1540 Belvidere Road, Belvidere, NC 27919.
Donnie T. Dozier
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Donnie Twiddy Dozier, 73, a native of Creswell, died August 15, 2007. She was the widow of Cecil C. Dozier.
Mrs. Dozier was a member of Laurel Avenue Church of Christ. She was a member of the choir and the Sunday school class of Royce Armstrong. She retired from Comess Brothers Furniture Company after 30 years of employment. She had also retired from Virginia Power.
Survivors include her daughter, Jacquelyn S. Inge of Virginia Beach; her daughter, Joanna S. Kires of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; two stepchildren, Jeff Dozier of Severn, Md., and Jennie Shipley of Virginia Beach; one grandson; two stepgrandchildren; seven sisters, Helen T. Street, Delma T. Clough, Mary T. Sallenger, all of Windsor, Wilma T. Spencer of Creswell, Martha T. Phelps and Joyce T. Ferrell, both of Newport, Dorothy Helterbran of Portsmouth; and one brother, Ben F. Twiddy of Creswell.
A funeral was conducted Monday at Laurel Avenue Church of Christ with Rupert Wallace and the Rev. Brandon Spruill. Burial followed at Scuppernong Church of Christ, Creswell in the church cemetery. Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Indian River Chapel.
Elsie M. Earley
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. n Elsie M. Earley, died August 17, 2007 at Sentara Nursing Center.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Pembroke Manor United Church of Christ, Independence Blvd., Virginia Beach, by the Rev. William H. Parker Jr. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Ahoskie. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.
She was a member of Pembroke Manor United Church of Christ.
Survivors include one son, William Jerome Earley of Virginia Beach; two daughters, Peggy A. Earley and Frayer E. Lawrence, both of Virginia Beach; one brother, Henry C. Porter of Ahoskie; four sisters, Queenie Britt and Eunice Pierce, both of Ahoskie, Katie Myrick of Murfreesboro and Dorothy Webster of Elizabeth City; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Leon Chisley Jr.
SUNBURY n Leon F. Chisley Jr., 78, a native of Washington, DC, died August 17, 2007 at Sentara Obici Hospital.
A service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hertford County Undertakers Chapel, Sunbury.
Survivors include his wife, Marie Chisley of Sunbury; four sons, Michael Chisley of Fort Washington, Md., Larry Chisley of Washington, Ronald Chisley of Smithfield, Va., and Stevie Chisley of Washington; one daughter, Jacqueline Chisley of Washington; two brothers, Charles Chisley of Washington and Owen Chisley of Florida; sister, Roslyn Mims of Maryland; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Myrtle Rawls
AULANDER n Myrtle Louise Lane Rawls, 76, a native of Northampton County, died August 18, 2007 at her residence.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please give donations to the American Cancer Society or Hospice in memory of Myrtle Lane Rawls.
Mrs. Rawls was a self-employed farmer and also worked for Mylcraft Manufacturing Company.
Survivors include her husband, William “Bill” Rawls of Aulander; sons, Rick Rawls and Tim Rawls, both of Aulander; a daughter, Cheryl Rawls of Aulander; a sister, Levenia Askew of Milwaukee; brothers, Linwood Lane of Woodland, Alvin Lane of Murfreesboro and Raleigh Lane of Newport News, Va.; and two grandchildren.
